6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Texas farmers and ranchers play an important role in |

7 | 7 | | the lives of people worldwide; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Facing ever-increasing challenges, agricultural |

9 | 9 | | producers continue to fulfill an enduring legacy, ensuring that |
---|
10 | 10 | | people everywhere have an abundant, reliable, and affordable supply |
---|
11 | 11 | | of food, natural fiber, and other agricultural products; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Agriculture is the second-largest resource-based |
---|
13 | 13 | | industry in Texas, generating more than $103 billion for the |
---|
14 | 14 | | economy in 2007 and providing employment for one out of every seven |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texans; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Texas leads other states in the production of |
---|
17 | 17 | | cotton, cattle, sheep, goats, wool, mohair, hay, and biodiesel; it |
---|
18 | 18 | | is the second-largest agricultural producer in the nation, and it |
---|
19 | 19 | | ranks third in the United States in exports, with more than $5 |
---|
20 | 20 | | billion earned in 2007; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In addition to being the fifth-largest wine |
---|
22 | 22 | | producing state in the nation, Texas is a key producer of olives, |
---|
23 | 23 | | with an estimated 250 tons harvested in 2008; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Agriculture also plays a major role in water |
---|
25 | 25 | | conservation, rural economic development, global trade, and the |
---|
26 | 26 | | preservation of the environment; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, This vital industry continues to meet the basic |
---|
28 | 28 | | needs of the world for food and clothing, while also contributing to |
---|
29 | 29 | | the manufacture of such useful everyday goods as laundry detergent |
---|
30 | 30 | | and toothpaste, and it is additionally the source of leading |
---|
31 | 31 | | advancements in medicine, biotechnology, and food safety; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The people of this state owe an immeasurable debt of |
---|
33 | 33 | | gratitude to Texas farmers and ranchers for all they contribute to |
---|
34 | 34 | | the health and well-being of all our citizens, and a special day to |
---|
35 | 35 | | honor the Texas agriculture industry is most fitting; now, |
---|
36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 2, 2009, as Agriculture Day in |
---|
39 | 39 | | Texas and extend best wishes to all those involved in agricultural |

40 | 40 | | production in the state. |
