66 WHEREAS, Texas farmers and ranchers play an important role in
77 the lives of people worldwide; and
88 WHEREAS, Facing ever-increasing challenges, agricultural
99 producers continue to fulfill an enduring legacy, ensuring that
1010 people everywhere have an abundant, reliable, and affordable supply
1111 of food, natural fiber, and other agricultural products; and
1212 WHEREAS, Agriculture is the second-largest resource-based
1313 industry in Texas, generating more than $103 billion for the
1414 economy in 2007 and providing employment for one out of every seven
1515 Texans; and
1616 WHEREAS, Texas leads other states in the production of
1717 cotton, cattle, sheep, goats, wool, mohair, hay, and biodiesel; it
1818 is the second-largest agricultural producer in the nation, and it
1919 ranks third in the United States in exports, with more than $5
2020 billion earned in 2007; and
2121 WHEREAS, In addition to being the fifth-largest wine
2222 producing state in the nation, Texas is a key producer of olives,
2323 with an estimated 250 tons harvested in 2008; and
2424 WHEREAS, Agriculture also plays a major role in water
2525 conservation, rural economic development, global trade, and the
2626 preservation of the environment; and
2727 WHEREAS, This vital industry continues to meet the basic
2828 needs of the world for food and clothing, while also contributing to
2929 the manufacture of such useful everyday goods as laundry detergent
3030 and toothpaste, and it is additionally the source of leading
3131 advancements in medicine, biotechnology, and food safety; and
3232 WHEREAS, The people of this state owe an immeasurable debt of
3333 gratitude to Texas farmers and ranchers for all they contribute to
3434 the health and well-being of all our citizens, and a special day to
3535 honor the Texas agriculture industry is most fitting; now,
3636 therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3838 Legislature hereby recognize April 2, 2009, as Agriculture Day in
3939 Texas and extend best wishes to all those involved in agricultural
4040 production in the state.
