5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The students, faculty, staff, and administrators of |
---|
6 | 6 | | J. L. Long Middle School in Dallas are commemorating the 75th |
---|
7 | 7 | | anniversary of its founding on April 2, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In the early 1930s, as junior high schools were |
---|
9 | 9 | | being created across the country, Dallas educators embraced the |
---|
10 | 10 | | idea of providing students with a transitional period between |
---|
11 | 11 | | elementary and high schools, and J. L. Long Middle School was |
---|
12 | 12 | | established; the second institution of its kind to be built in |
---|
13 | 13 | | Dallas, the school was named in honor of John Lawson Long, a former |
---|
14 | 14 | | superintendent of Dallas schools who helped lay the foundation for |
---|
15 | 15 | | the Dallas Independent School District; the school's building was |
---|
16 | 16 | | designed by architects in a modified Elizabethan style with art |
---|
17 | 17 | | deco features, and local artist Olin Travis painted a mural for the |
---|
18 | 18 | | library as part of the Depression-era WPA program; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, J. L. Long Middle School opened its doors to 550 |
---|
20 | 20 | | students in September 1933, and its first principal, C. W. Morris, |
---|
21 | 21 | | led the institution for the next 16 years; today, the school has an |
---|
22 | 22 | | enrollment of nearly 1,000 students in grades six through eight; |
---|
23 | 23 | | skillfully guided by principal Danielle Petters, it offers |
---|
24 | 24 | | award-winning programs in music, math, science, and athletics, and |
---|
25 | 25 | | the school community embraces its motto, "Long on Pride!"; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, J. L. Long Middle |
---|
27 | 27 | | School has dedicated itself to providing a well-rounded education |
---|
28 | 28 | | and to encouraging academic achievement and personal excellence, |
---|
29 | 29 | | and in so doing, it has helped ensure a bright future for many young |
---|
30 | 30 | | Texans; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of J. L. Long |
---|
33 | 33 | | Middle School and extend to all those associated with the |
---|
34 | 34 | | institution sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it |
