5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their |
---|
6 | 6 | | memories of the Honorable Eduardo E. de Ases of Corpus Christi, who |
---|
7 | 7 | | passed away on February 21, 2009, at the age of 80; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Refugio, Judge de Ases was born on |
---|
9 | 9 | | October 26, 1928; he graduated from Corpus Christi High School and |
---|
10 | 10 | | attended Del Mar College, later serving his country for five years |
---|
11 | 11 | | with the U.S. Army; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Judge de Ases went on to graduate from The |
---|
13 | 13 | | University of Texas School of Law; he earned his license to practice |
---|
14 | 14 | | law in 1959, and he opened a law office in Corpus Christi before |
---|
15 | 15 | | becoming an assistant county attorney for Nueces County; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Desiring to serve his community, Judge de Ases was a |
---|
17 | 17 | | three-term Corpus Christi city council member and was elected mayor |
---|
18 | 18 | | pro tem in 1977; he was also a former president of the Corpus |
---|
19 | 19 | | Christi Bar Association; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Culminating a notable legal career, Judge de Ases |
---|
21 | 21 | | was unanimously appointed magistrate on the U.S. District Court for |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Southern District of Texas in 1980 and again in 1988, becoming |
---|
23 | 23 | | the first full-time Hispanic magistrate in the United States; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Judge de Ases was devoted to helping others; he was a |
---|
25 | 25 | | volunteer eucharistic minister at St. Pius X Catholic Church and a |
---|
26 | 26 | | reading mentor to children at local elementary schools, and he |
---|
27 | 27 | | generously assisted people working toward their citizenship at the |
---|
28 | 28 | | Corpus Christi Literacy Council; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Known for his efforts in behalf of his fellow |
---|
30 | 30 | | citizens, Judge de Ases was honored as a recipient of the Cecil E. |
---|
31 | 31 | | Burney Humanitarian Award from the Corpus Christi Bar Association |
---|
32 | 32 | | and the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of |
---|
33 | 33 | | Christians and Jews; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Eduardo de Ases was a loving husband and father, a |
---|
35 | 35 | | distinguished jurist, and a remarkable community leader, and his |
---|
36 | 36 | | legacy of good works will continue to bring positive benefits to the |
---|
37 | 37 | | lives of countless people for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Eduardo E. de Ases and |
---|
40 | 40 | | extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of |
---|
41 | 41 | | 49 years, Maria; to his sons, Carlos and Rene; to his daughter, |
---|
42 | 42 | | Juanita; to his brother, Lawrence; to his three grandchildren; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
45 | 45 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
46 | 46 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eduardo E. |
---|
