44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their
66 memories of the Honorable Eduardo E. de Ases of Corpus Christi, who
77 passed away on February 21, 2009, at the age of 80; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Refugio, Judge de Ases was born on
99 October 26, 1928; he graduated from Corpus Christi High School and
1010 attended Del Mar College, later serving his country for five years
1111 with the U.S. Army; and
1212 WHEREAS, Judge de Ases went on to graduate from The
1313 University of Texas School of Law; he earned his license to practice
1414 law in 1959, and he opened a law office in Corpus Christi before
1515 becoming an assistant county attorney for Nueces County; and
1616 WHEREAS, Desiring to serve his community, Judge de Ases was a
1717 three-term Corpus Christi city council member and was elected mayor
1818 pro tem in 1977; he was also a former president of the Corpus
1919 Christi Bar Association; and
2020 WHEREAS, Culminating a notable legal career, Judge de Ases
2121 was unanimously appointed magistrate on the U.S. District Court for
2222 the Southern District of Texas in 1980 and again in 1988, becoming
2323 the first full-time Hispanic magistrate in the United States; and
2424 WHEREAS, Judge de Ases was devoted to helping others; he was a
2525 volunteer eucharistic minister at St. Pius X Catholic Church and a
2626 reading mentor to children at local elementary schools, and he
2727 generously assisted people working toward their citizenship at the
2828 Corpus Christi Literacy Council; and
2929 WHEREAS, Known for his efforts in behalf of his fellow
3030 citizens, Judge de Ases was honored as a recipient of the Cecil E.
3131 Burney Humanitarian Award from the Corpus Christi Bar Association
3232 and the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of
3333 Christians and Jews; and
3434 WHEREAS, Eduardo de Ases was a loving husband and father, a
3535 distinguished jurist, and a remarkable community leader, and his
3636 legacy of good works will continue to bring positive benefits to the
3737 lives of countless people for years to come; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Eduardo E. de Ases and
4040 extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of
4141 49 years, Maria; to his sons, Carlos and Rene; to his daughter,
4242 Juanita; to his brother, Lawrence; to his three grandchildren; and
4343 to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4646 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eduardo E.
4747 de Ases.
