55 WHEREAS, The friends and family of U.S. Army Specialist
66 Matthew Troy Morris suffered an immeasurable loss with the death of
77 this valiant young man, who was killed on April 6, 2008, while
88 bravely serving his country in Iraq; and
99 WHEREAS, Matthew Morris was a loving son and brother who was
1010 known for his energy, affability, and determination; he enjoyed
1111 video games and trying out new barbecue recipes and hoped to one day
1212 become a history teacher; and
1313 WHEREAS, Born on July 16, 1984, in Fairfax, Virginia, he
1414 attended Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia, where
1515 he earned an ROTC leadership award; he later attended Cedar Park
1616 High School and went on to score in the 90th percentile on each
1717 section of the General Educational Development test; and
1818 WHEREAS, Specialist Morris joined the army, serving with the
1919 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in Balad;
2020 despite the dangerous nature of his work, he remained devoted to his
2121 mission, and the heroism he demonstrated in Iraq earned him the
2222 Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the National Service Defense
2323 Medal, and several other decorations; and
2424 WHEREAS, Matthew Morris exemplified the highest ideals of the
2525 U.S. armed forces; although his passing has left a void in the lives
2626 of those who were fortunate enough to know him, they will forever
2727 carry memories of this heroic young man close in their hearts; now,
2828 therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3030 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
3131 Matthew Troy Morris and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
3232 his family: to his parents, Lisa and Glenn Morris; to his brothers
3333 and sister, Cory, Katie, and Sam; to his fiance, Julia Richardson;
3434 to his grandparents, Nancy Jackson and Joane Walters; to his aunt,
3535 Diane Afflerbach; to his uncles, John and Brian Walters, and to his
3636 other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3838 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3939 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Matthew
4040 Morris.
