55 WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately convey the heartache felt at
66 the loss of U.S. Marine First Lieutenant Matthew R. Vandegrift, who
77 died on April 21, 2008, at the age of 28, while bravely serving his
88 country; and
99 WHEREAS, Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment,
1010 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Lieutenant
1111 Vandegrift was killed during combat operations in Basra, Iraq; and
1212 WHEREAS, A former resident of the Steiner Ranch community in
1313 Austin, he attended Leander High School, where he was a member of
1414 the football team; he went on to earn his bachelor's degree from
1515 Texas A&M University and was later commissioned through Officer
1616 Candidate School; and
1717 WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt to our nation's
1818 servicemen and servicewomen, whose courageous efforts and enormous
1919 sacrifices are deserving of their fellow citizens' deepest respect
2020 and gratitude; and
2121 WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest ideals of the U.S. armed
2222 forces, Matt Vandegrift inspired others with his fortitude,
2323 tenacity, and courage; although his death has left a void in the
2424 lives of his loved ones, they will forever carry memories of this
2525 heroic young man close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2727 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Lieutenant Matthew R.
2828 Vandegrift and extend sincerest sympathy to all those who mourn his
2929 passing; and, be it further
3030 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3131 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3232 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Matt
3333 Vandegrift.
