| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately convey the heartache felt at |

| 6 | 6 | | the loss of U.S. Marine First Lieutenant Matthew R. Vandegrift, who |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | died on April 21, 2008, at the age of 28, while bravely serving his |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | country; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Lieutenant |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Vandegrift was killed during combat operations in Basra, Iraq; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, A former resident of the Steiner Ranch community in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Austin, he attended Leander High School, where he was a member of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the football team; he went on to earn his bachelor's degree from |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Texas A&M University and was later commissioned through Officer |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Candidate School; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt to our nation's |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | servicemen and servicewomen, whose courageous efforts and enormous |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | sacrifices are deserving of their fellow citizens' deepest respect |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and gratitude; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest ideals of the U.S. armed |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | forces, Matt Vandegrift inspired others with his fortitude, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | tenacity, and courage; although his death has left a void in the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | lives of his loved ones, they will forever carry memories of this |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | heroic young man close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Lieutenant Matthew R. |

| 28 | 28 | | Vandegrift and extend sincerest sympathy to all those who mourn his |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | passing; and, be it further |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
