R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
passing of Mavis L. Cook of Amarillo on July 11, 2008, at the age of
91; and
WHEREAS, The daughter of Charles and Mattie Terrell, the
former Mavis L. Terrell was born on October 19, 1916, in Caddo
Mills; in 1925, her family relocated to the small Panhandle town of
Sudan and established a 165-acre farm in Lamb County, contributing
to the development of Sudan as an agricultural community in the
1920s and 1930s; she was raised on the farm alongside her siblings,
Elmer, Pearl, Joe, Doyle, and Coleman, and she went on to attend
West Texas State Teachers College; after graduation, she moved to
Littlefield, where she taught sixth grade, worked with the local
4-H Club, and also served as county agent; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan was joined in matrimony to
Charles Marvin Cook on September 24, 1942; blessed with two sons,
Charles and Michael, the young family later relocated to Amarillo;
Mrs. Cook and her husband nurtured a fulfilling relationship that
spanned three decades, until Mr. Cook's death in 1972; and
WHEREAS, She was a dedicated math teacher at Forest Hill
Elementary School in Amarillo for 26 years beginning in 1960; she
also owned and managed her family's farm for many years, and she was
an active member of Covenant Fellowship; Mrs. Cook took great
pleasure in traveling with her family, and she also enjoyed sports,
reading, and gardening; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mavis Cook was an inspiring
model of strength and determination, and she leaves behind a legacy
that will forever be treasured by all those who held her dear; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mavis L. Cook and
extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her sons,
Charles Cook and his wife, Betty, and Michael Cook and his wife,
Shelly; to her grandchildren, Lori Flom, C. R. Cook, Cynthia
Flowers, Melissa Cook, Taylor Michelle Seppi, and Captain Jordan
Kathleen Cook; to her great-grandchildren, Harley, Haley, Jacob,
and Ashley; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mavis Cook.
