5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Sculptor Jess Moroles of Rockport was one of only |
---|
6 | 6 | | nine people to receive the 2008 National Medal of Arts, which was |
---|
7 | 7 | | presented to him by President George W. Bush on November 17; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Corpus Christi in 1950, Mr. Moroles earned a |
---|
9 | 9 | | bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of North Texas in |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1978; he subsequently apprenticed under Luis Jimenez in El Paso and |
---|
11 | 11 | | lived and worked in Italy before building a studio in Rockport in |
---|
12 | 12 | | 1983; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Moroles exhibited at Texas museums early on, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | after receiving the Awards in the Visual Arts Fellowship in 1982, |
---|
15 | 15 | | his works were included in a two-year traveling exhibition that |
---|
16 | 16 | | originated at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; his |
---|
17 | 17 | | penchant for large-scale granite sculpture developed along the way, |
---|
18 | 18 | | and the results are now found in a variety of outdoor spaces |
---|
19 | 19 | | throughout the country, including CBS Plaza in New York City; his |
---|
20 | 20 | | largest sculpture is the Houston Police Officers Memorial, which |
---|
21 | 21 | | spans 120 feet by 120 feet and is the site of an annual procession |
---|
22 | 22 | | and wreath-laying ceremony; besides its size, a trademark of his |
---|
23 | 23 | | work is highly polished areas of granite juxtaposed with rough |
---|
24 | 24 | | natural surfaces; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The stunning sculptures of Mr. Moroles have |
---|
26 | 26 | | impressed audiences far beyond Texas and the United States; |
---|
27 | 27 | | included in more than 160 one-person exhibitions and some 200 group |
---|
28 | 28 | | exhibitions, they have also found permanent homes in China, Egypt, |
---|
29 | 29 | | France, Italy, Japan, and Switzerland and in numerous museum, |
---|
30 | 30 | | corporate, public, and private collections; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Recognized for his significant artistic |
---|
32 | 32 | | contributions, Mr. Moroles has been appointed to the Visual Arts |
---|
33 | 33 | | Advisory Board at the University of North Texas as well as to the |
---|
34 | 34 | | boards of the International Sculpture Center, the Art Museum of |
---|
35 | 35 | | South Texas, and the National American Art Museum; moreover, he is |
---|
36 | 36 | | the recipient of the 2007 Texas Medal of Arts Award for Visual Arts, |
---|
37 | 37 | | among many other honors; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Both remarkably talented and wholly dedicated to his |
---|
39 | 39 | | art, Jess Moroles has moved countless individuals with his |
---|
40 | 40 | | dramatic and inspiring sculptures, and the Lone Star State is |
---|
41 | 41 | | indeed proud to call him a native son; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jess Moroles on his receipt of a |
---|
44 | 44 | | 2008 National Medal of Arts and extend to him sincere best wishes |

45 | 45 | | for continued success; and, be it further |
