55 WHEREAS, Sculptor Jess Moroles of Rockport was one of only
66 nine people to receive the 2008 National Medal of Arts, which was
77 presented to him by President George W. Bush on November 17; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Corpus Christi in 1950, Mr. Moroles earned a
99 bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of North Texas in
1010 1978; he subsequently apprenticed under Luis Jimenez in El Paso and
1111 lived and worked in Italy before building a studio in Rockport in
1212 1983; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Moroles exhibited at Texas museums early on, and
1414 after receiving the Awards in the Visual Arts Fellowship in 1982,
1515 his works were included in a two-year traveling exhibition that
1616 originated at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; his
1717 penchant for large-scale granite sculpture developed along the way,
1818 and the results are now found in a variety of outdoor spaces
1919 throughout the country, including CBS Plaza in New York City; his
2020 largest sculpture is the Houston Police Officers Memorial, which
2121 spans 120 feet by 120 feet and is the site of an annual procession
2222 and wreath-laying ceremony; besides its size, a trademark of his
2323 work is highly polished areas of granite juxtaposed with rough
2424 natural surfaces; and
2525 WHEREAS, The stunning sculptures of Mr. Moroles have
2626 impressed audiences far beyond Texas and the United States;
2727 included in more than 160 one-person exhibitions and some 200 group
2828 exhibitions, they have also found permanent homes in China, Egypt,
2929 France, Italy, Japan, and Switzerland and in numerous museum,
3030 corporate, public, and private collections; and
3131 WHEREAS, Recognized for his significant artistic
3232 contributions, Mr. Moroles has been appointed to the Visual Arts
3333 Advisory Board at the University of North Texas as well as to the
3434 boards of the International Sculpture Center, the Art Museum of
3535 South Texas, and the National American Art Museum; moreover, he is
3636 the recipient of the 2007 Texas Medal of Arts Award for Visual Arts,
3737 among many other honors; and
3838 WHEREAS, Both remarkably talented and wholly dedicated to his
3939 art, Jess Moroles has moved countless individuals with his
4040 dramatic and inspiring sculptures, and the Lone Star State is
4141 indeed proud to call him a native son; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4343 Legislature hereby congratulate Jess Moroles on his receipt of a
4444 2008 National Medal of Arts and extend to him sincere best wishes
4545 for continued success; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for Mr. Moroles as an expression of high regard by the
4848 Texas House of Representatives.
