| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The education of young Texans is a vital enterprise |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | for every school in the Lone Star State, and Our Mother of Mercy |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Catholic School in Beaumont has dedicated itself admirably to that |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | worthy goal for more than eight decades; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Opened in 1927, the institution was established in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | an effort to provide area schoolchildren with a quality education |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | in a religious environment; today, it remains the only |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | predominantly African American school in the Diocese of Beaumont; |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The school serves students in prekindergarten |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | through sixth grade, and academic performance is enhanced by small |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | class size and by teachers who make an effort to work one-on-one |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | with each pupil; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Faith plays an integral role in the curriculum, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | educators and students alike thrive under the leadership of Father |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Henry Davis and principal Dolores Fulton; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, With nine classrooms, a library, and a computer lab, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the facility continues to grow to meet the needs of its student |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | body; in the spring of 2009, the school is celebrating the opening |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of its new gymnasium, which was made possible by a generous $1 |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | million donation from a former student; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, Our Mother of Mercy |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Catholic School has provided a well-rounded education and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | encouraged academic achievement and personal excellence, and in so |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | doing it has helped ensure a bright future for generations of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | students; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commend Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School for |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | its efforts in behalf of the youth of Beaumont and extend to all |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | those associated with the institution sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | continued success; and, be it further |
|---|
