| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Vietnamese American residents of the Lone Star State |

| 6 | 6 | | are gathering on January 26, 2009, to begin their celebration of Tet |

| 7 | 7 | | Nguyen Dan, the Vietnamese New Year; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Recognized as the beginning of spring as well as the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | start of a new year on the lunar calendar, Tet Nguyen Dan, or simply |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | "Tet," is a time of renewal in which revelers beckon good fortune |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | for the coming year; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Traditional celebrations can extend over several |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | days and feature a variety of rich customs, which include |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | displaying red decorations for luck, welcoming auspicious guests |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | into the home, and donning new clothing to represent the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | rejuvenating spirit of the holiday; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Food and family are central to the Tet festivities; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | individuals gather with their loved ones to share special dishes |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | that mark the occasion and to exchange gifts; relatives who have |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | passed on are also remembered during this time, and they are honored |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | with cemetery visits and other rituals; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Tet Nguyen Dan is an important part of life for |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Americans who trace their ancestry to Southeast Asia, and this |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | cherished holiday provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | many ways in which the Vietnamese community contributes to the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | State of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Tet Nguyen Dan and extend to the |

| 29 | 29 | | Texas residents of Vietnamese heritage sincere best wishes for a |
