55 WHEREAS, Vietnamese American residents of the Lone Star State
66 are gathering on January 26, 2009, to begin their celebration of Tet
77 Nguyen Dan, the Vietnamese New Year; and
88 WHEREAS, Recognized as the beginning of spring as well as the
99 start of a new year on the lunar calendar, Tet Nguyen Dan, or simply
1010 "Tet," is a time of renewal in which revelers beckon good fortune
1111 for the coming year; and
1212 WHEREAS, Traditional celebrations can extend over several
1313 days and feature a variety of rich customs, which include
1414 displaying red decorations for luck, welcoming auspicious guests
1515 into the home, and donning new clothing to represent the
1616 rejuvenating spirit of the holiday; and
1717 WHEREAS, Food and family are central to the Tet festivities;
1818 individuals gather with their loved ones to share special dishes
1919 that mark the occasion and to exchange gifts; relatives who have
2020 passed on are also remembered during this time, and they are honored
2121 with cemetery visits and other rituals; and
2222 WHEREAS, Tet Nguyen Dan is an important part of life for
2323 Americans who trace their ancestry to Southeast Asia, and this
2424 cherished holiday provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the
2525 many ways in which the Vietnamese community contributes to the
2626 State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
2727 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2828 Legislature hereby commemorate Tet Nguyen Dan and extend to the
2929 Texas residents of Vietnamese heritage sincere best wishes for a
3030 memorable celebration.
