H.R. No. 1234 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Residents of Overton lost a beloved neighbor and a dedicated civic leader on March 18, 2009, with the passing of Mayor Robert Lee Young at the age of 67; and WHEREAS, The son of M. Pete and Pauline Gill Young, Robert Young was born on November 4, 1941, in Henderson and was raised in East Texas; he went on to graduate from Overton High School, and he married the former Lana Laughlin in 1961; for more than three decades, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, and he retired as the Overton postmaster in 1997; and WHEREAS, After serving for eight years on the Overton City Council, Mr. Young was elected mayor in 2005, and at the time of his passing he was in his second term of office; this esteemed Texan had also been president of the Overton School Board, and he was active in the Overton-New London Chamber of Commerce, which selected him as its Citizen of the Year in 2008; in addition, Mayor Young was honored with the State of Texas Outstanding Public Service Award; and WHEREAS, Involved in a number of local organizations, Mayor Young shared his time and talents with the Overton Golf Association, the Overton Cemetery Association, the Texas Association of Sports Officials, and the Circle Eight Square Dance Club, which he helped organize, and he was a former deacon at the First Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, With a strong commitment to his community, Robert Young enhanced the lives of countless individuals, and he will forever be treasured in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Robert Lee Young and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Lana Young; to his daughters, Robbi and her husband, Mark Carnes, Nickie and her husband, Johnny Rhea, and Jennifer and her husband, Keith LaRue; to his brothers, Willard and Dudley Young; to his grandchildren, Kyle and Amanda Osburn, Stephen Bearden, Drake and Caden Plunkett, and Carissa Magras; to his great-grandchildren, Sydni Kyle Vaughn and Jesse Magras; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mayor Robert Lee Young.
