55 WHEREAS, Many Asian American residents of the Lone Star State
66 are commemorating the Lunar New Year on January 26, 2009; and
77 WHEREAS, This exciting holiday ushers in the Year of the Ox on
88 the Chinese calendar and marks the beginning of a significant
99 season in Asian culture; a time of renewal that emphasizes new
1010 opportunities, this festive occasion also serves to strengthen and
1111 enhance the bonds of the international community in Texas; and
1212 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is traditionally observed with
1313 colorful interpretations of the cultural traditions of the East,
1414 including martial arts performances and dramatic firecracker
1515 displays; lion and dragon dances, which are said to banish evil
1616 spirits and to beckon good fortune for the coming year, are often
1717 the much-anticipated highlights of these events; and
1818 WHEREAS, Lunar New Year celebrations showcase the rich
1919 heritage of many Texas residents whose ancestry originates in Asia,
2020 and observing this special occasion promotes a greater appreciation
2121 of the vibrant multicultural character of the Lone Star State; now,
2222 therefore, be it
2323 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2424 Legislature hereby commemorate the Lunar New Year and extend to all
2525 those citizens who are celebrating the holiday sincere best wishes
2626 for prosperity and happiness in the coming year.
