5	5	WHEREAS, Residents of Edinburg lost an admired civic leader
6	6	and a cherished friend with the passing of Alfredo R. Longoria on
7	7	March 22, 2009, at the age of 80; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Edinburg in 1928, Fred Longoria went on to
9	9	serve in the National Guard, and he became a successful businessman
10	10	in his hometown; he was the owner of Fred's Food Store, Clean Rite
11	11	Janitorial Supplies, and Sweet Scent; and
12	12	WHEREAS, In 1992, Mr. Longoria joined the Edinburg City
13	13	Council with the pledge to find solutions to alleviate downtown
14	14	flooding, which occurred when heavy rains inundated the area; he
15	15	remained true to his word, and his efforts resulted in the
16	16	installation of a more effective drainage infrastructure;
17	17	throughout his decade-long tenure in municipal government, he held
18	18	the positions of city commissioner, mayor pro tempore, and member
19	19	of the Edinburg Planning and Zoning Department; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria was an integral part of the councils
21	21	that significantly changed the image and economic vitality of
22	22	Edinburg; along with his colleagues, he contributed to the creation
23	23	of the Edinburg Cable Network, the World Birding Center, and The
24	24	University of Texas Regional Academic Health Center Medical
25	25	Research Division in Edinburg, as well as to the renovation of the
26	26	South Texas International Airport at Edinburg and the construction
27	27	of the Edinburg Professional Baseball Stadium; a champion for
28	28	municipal improvements, Mr. Longoria worked with the city council
29	29	to secure state funding for local and state roadway system upgrades
30	30	and to bring jobs and construction projects to the region, thereby
31	31	greatly enhancing the role of Edinburg in the economy of South
32	32	Texas; and
33	33	WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan further distinguished himself
34	34	as a member of the board of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and as
35	35	president of the board of Amigos del Valle; he was also a congregant
36	36	at St. Joseph Catholic Church; and
37	37	WHEREAS, With his kindness and generosity, Fred Longoria
38	38	demonstrated an enduring commitment to his fellow citizens, and his
39	39	notable legacy of public service will not soon be forgotten by all
40	40	those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
42	42	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Alfredo R. Longoria
43	43	and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
44	44	wife, Sylvia Longoria; to his children, Clarissa Longoria Pea and
45	45	her husband, Aron Leonel, Priscilla Olivarez and her husband, Rick,
46	46	Michelle Guerrero and her husband, Manuel, Derek Ruiz and his wife,
47	47	Sandy, Gina Longoria, Lolly Pea and her husband, Jesus, and Fred
48	48	Longoria, Jr., and his wife, Allison; to his 14 grandchildren; to
49	49	his siblings, Miguel Longoria and his wife, Angie, Charlie Longoria
50	50	and his wife, Kay, and Olga Deroaul and her husband, Henri; to his
51	51	sister-in-law, Leonor Longoria; and to his other relatives and many
52	52	friends; and, be it further
53	53	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
54	54	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
55	55	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Fred
56	56	Longoria.
