H.R. No. 1257
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, John M. Roberts, the publisher of the Victoria
Advocate, has received the 2008 Frank W. Mayborn Award for
Community Leadership from the Texas Daily Newspaper Association;
and
WHEREAS, Established in 1992 by Sue Mayborn to honor her late
husband, Frank W. Mayborn, this accolade honors media professionals
who have not only excelled in their field but also demonstrated a
strong commitment to serving others; Mr. Mayborn was a
newspaperman, a communications executive, and a pioneer in the
radio and television industries, and he participated in various
community service efforts, especially in the area of education; and
WHEREAS, This year's designee, John M. Roberts, was born in
1945 in Victoria, and he went on to study journalism at The
University of Texas at Austin; answering his nation's call to duty,
he joined the United States Air Force and served from 1968 through
1972; shortly thereafter, he launched his career with the Victoria
Advocate, and he became its publisher in 1980; he has been active in
his profession as president of the South Texas Press Association
and the Texas Daily Newspaper Association, and he was named
Newspaper Leader of the Year by the TDNA in 1989; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts has also been an engaged citizen of his
hometown, dedicating his time to such organizations as the Victoria
Performing Arts Center and the Victoria Regional Airport
Commission, and he is an ardent supporter of local education
initiatives; in addition, he served as president of the Victoria
Rotary Club, the Victoria Economic Development Corporation, and the
Boys and Girls Club of Victoria and as a board member for Citizens
Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoys the love and
support of his wife, Donna Wyrick Roberts, and the couple's two
children, Patrick and Ann; and
WHEREAS, A distinguished journalist and an outstanding civic
leader, John Roberts has contributed to Victoria in myriad ways,
and he has garnered the lasting respect and admiration of his fellow
residents and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate John M. Roberts on his receipt of
the 2008 Frank W. Mayborn Award for Community Leadership and extend
to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Roberts as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
