| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, John M. Roberts, the publisher of the Victoria |

| 6 | 6 | | Advocate, has received the 2008 Frank W. Mayborn Award for |

| 7 | 7 | | Community Leadership from the Texas Daily Newspaper Association; |

| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1992 by Sue Mayborn to honor her late |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | husband, Frank W. Mayborn, this accolade honors media professionals |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | who have not only excelled in their field but also demonstrated a |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | strong commitment to serving others; Mr. Mayborn was a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | newspaperman, a communications executive, and a pioneer in the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | radio and television industries, and he participated in various |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | community service efforts, especially in the area of education; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, This year's designee, John M. Roberts, was born in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | 1945 in Victoria, and he went on to study journalism at The |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | University of Texas at Austin; answering his nation's call to duty, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | he joined the United States Air Force and served from 1968 through |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 1972; shortly thereafter, he launched his career with the Victoria |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Advocate, and he became its publisher in 1980; he has been active in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | his profession as president of the South Texas Press Association |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and the Texas Daily Newspaper Association, and he was named |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Newspaper Leader of the Year by the TDNA in 1989; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts has also been an engaged citizen of his |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | hometown, dedicating his time to such organizations as the Victoria |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Performing Arts Center and the Victoria Regional Airport |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Commission, and he is an ardent supporter of local education |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | initiatives; in addition, he served as president of the Victoria |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Rotary Club, the Victoria Economic Development Corporation, and the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Boys and Girls Club of Victoria and as a board member for Citizens |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Memorial Hospital; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoys the love and |

| 34 | 34 | | support of his wife, Donna Wyrick Roberts, and the couple's two |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | children, Patrick and Ann; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, A distinguished journalist and an outstanding civic |

| 37 | 37 | | leader, John Roberts has contributed to Victoria in myriad ways, |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | and he has garnered the lasting respect and admiration of his fellow |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | residents and colleagues; now, therefore, be it |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate John M. Roberts on his receipt of |

| 42 | 42 | | the 2008 Frank W. Mayborn Award for Community Leadership and extend |

| 43 | 43 | | to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; |
