44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Houston Shifa Services Foundation is
66 celebrating the opening of the Shifa Abu Bakr Clinic on May 2, 2009;
77 and
88 WHEREAS, Established in 1997, the Shifa Foundation works to
99 meet the needs of the indigent and impoverished population in and
1010 around Houston; the initiative was started by a group of 10
1111 volunteers who provided free medical care, computer literacy
1212 classes, and legal consultations to their clients on weekends in a
1313 small room in Southwest Houston; and
1414 WHEREAS, From humble beginnings, this charitable
1515 organization has grown to include 160 volunteers; 55 specialist
1616 doctors operate out of four clinics throughout the Bayou City,
1717 providing free outpatient medical care to individuals in need; to
1818 date, more than 17,000 people have benefited from Shifa Foundation
1919 services, valued at nearly $3 million; and
2020 WHEREAS, To better meet the needs of its patients, Shifa
2121 Foundation has founded two centers for adult and child education
2222 and has partnered with Masjid Teleem to operate a rehabilitation
2323 center for ex-offenders; the organization also extends assistance
2424 to those in need of family crisis intervention, senior citizen
2525 support, and low income housing; in addition, the group works to
2626 provide interim boarding and lodging to victims of family abuse;
2727 and
2828 WHEREAS, In 2007, the City of Houston awarded the
2929 organization a grant for the construction of a new facility, and the
3030 Kelsey-Seybold Clinic generously donated equipment and furnishings
3131 for the clinic; and
3232 WHEREAS, The Shifa Foundation and its dedicated volunteers
3333 provide critical services to vulnerable members of our society, and
3434 the Shifa Abu Bakr Clinic adds to the organization's ability to
3535 fulfill its noble aims; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3737 Legislature hereby honor the Houston Shifa Services Foundation on
3838 the occasion of the opening of the Shifa Abu Bakr Clinic and extend
3939 to all those associated with the foundation sincere best wishes for
4040 continued success with their important work; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4242 prepared for the foundation as an expression of high regard by the
4343 Texas House of Representatives.
