| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Houston Shifa Services Foundation is |

| 6 | 6 | | celebrating the opening of the Shifa Abu Bakr Clinic on May 2, 2009; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1997, the Shifa Foundation works to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | meet the needs of the indigent and impoverished population in and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | around Houston; the initiative was started by a group of 10 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | volunteers who provided free medical care, computer literacy |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | classes, and legal consultations to their clients on weekends in a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | small room in Southwest Houston; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, From humble beginnings, this charitable |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | organization has grown to include 160 volunteers; 55 specialist |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | doctors operate out of four clinics throughout the Bayou City, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | providing free outpatient medical care to individuals in need; to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | date, more than 17,000 people have benefited from Shifa Foundation |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | services, valued at nearly $3 million; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, To better meet the needs of its patients, Shifa |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Foundation has founded two centers for adult and child education |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and has partnered with Masjid Teleem to operate a rehabilitation |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | center for ex-offenders; the organization also extends assistance |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | to those in need of family crisis intervention, senior citizen |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | support, and low income housing; in addition, the group works to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | provide interim boarding and lodging to victims of family abuse; |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In 2007, the City of Houston awarded the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | organization a grant for the construction of a new facility, and the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Kelsey-Seybold Clinic generously donated equipment and furnishings |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | for the clinic; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The Shifa Foundation and its dedicated volunteers |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | provide critical services to vulnerable members of our society, and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the Shifa Abu Bakr Clinic adds to the organization's ability to |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | fulfill its noble aims; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby honor the Houston Shifa Services Foundation on |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | the occasion of the opening of the Shifa Abu Bakr Clinic and extend |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | to all those associated with the foundation sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | continued success with their important work; and, be it further |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

|---|
