5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, On Memorial Day 2009, area residents are gathering |
---|
6 | 6 | | at the Georgetown--Williamson County Veterans Memorial in Sun City |
---|
7 | 7 | | to solemnly honor all the men and women who have served, or who are |
---|
8 | 8 | | presently serving, in the United States Armed Forces; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The toll of war has been a heavy one: altogether, |
---|
10 | 10 | | more than a half-million U.S. military personnel have died in |
---|
11 | 11 | | battle, and approximately 1.5 million have been wounded; thousands |
---|
12 | 12 | | more have endured extreme privation as prisoners of war, and still |
---|
13 | 13 | | other thousands have been accounted as missing in action; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In communities across the country, citizens have |
---|
15 | 15 | | erected monuments as a tangible tribute to those who have dared all |
---|
16 | 16 | | in defiance of tyranny and in their country's defense; the majestic |
---|
17 | 17 | | memorial plaza in Sun City recognizes those who have served in the |
---|
18 | 18 | | nation's armed forces and honors the nearly 170 service members |
---|
19 | 19 | | from Williamson County who have given their lives in combat from |
---|
20 | 20 | | World War I to the present; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, This year, the memorial tablets listing those killed |
---|
22 | 22 | | in action bear two new names, those of U.S. Army Specialist Matthew |
---|
23 | 23 | | T. Morris of Cedar Park and U.S. Marine First Lieutenant Matthew R. |
---|
24 | 24 | | Vandegrift, a graduate of Leander High School; both of these |
---|
25 | 25 | | outstanding young men were mortally wounded while conducting |
---|
26 | 26 | | operations in Iraq; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, With U.S. troops today engaged in difficult |
---|
28 | 28 | | operations overseas, endeavoring to secure peace and stability in |
---|
29 | 29 | | dangerous environments, Memorial Day ceremonies resonate with |
---|
30 | 30 | | fresh meaning for American citizens, and it is a privilege to join |
---|
31 | 31 | | with the residents of Williamson County in paying homage to the |
---|
32 | 32 | | immeasurable courage, commitment, and sacrifice of this country's |
---|
33 | 33 | | military personnel; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Memorial Day observance |
---|
36 | 36 | | sponsored by the Sun City Texas Community Association and extend to |
---|
37 | 37 | | all those associated with that special event sincere appreciation |
---|
38 | 38 | | for their strong support of this country's servicemen and |
---|
39 | 39 | | servicewomen; and, be it further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

41 | 41 | | prepared for the Sun City Texas Community Association as an |
---|
42 | 42 | | expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
