R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever hold dear their
memories of Alexander Brough of Kerrville, who died on September
19, 2007, at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, "Jack" Brough was born in Chicago on August 4, 1910,
to James Alexander Brough and Ella Waffle Brough; as a young man, he
taught himself to fly without formal instruction, soloing for the
first time in 1928 in Evergreen Park, Illinois; he entered the
aviation industry in 1933, when he took a job with Braniff Airways
at Chicago Municipal Airport; and
WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Brough served his nation in
the United States Army Air Forces as a contracting officer for the
United States Air Transport Command; he received a commission as a
brigadier general in 1942 and held the rank until he was
decommissioned in 1945; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of a distinguished civilian career,
Mr. Brough served as an executive vice president for both Trans
World Airlines and the RCA/Hertz Corporation; he lived in Chicago,
New York City, Kansas City, and Dallas, and his business took him to
six of the world's seven continents; and
WHEREAS, After retiring in 1977, Mr. Brough settled in
Kerrville, where he became an active member of the community; he
chaired the city-county airport board from 1978 to 1982 and
subsequently served as a member of the city council from 1982 to
1988 and as mayor of Kerrville from 1984 to 1988; and
WHEREAS, This energetic and caring man was also a member of
the Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club, a volunteer with the United Way,
and a member and vice president of the Upper Guadalupe River
Authority Board of Directors; for his contributions to Kerrville
and the surrounding area, he was recognized by the city council in
1990 as an Outstanding Citizen; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brough never lost his love of aviation, and
throughout his life he continued to take pride in his military
service; he held membership in the OX5 Aviation Pioneers, the
Military Officers Association of America, and the Air Force
Association; and
WHEREAS, Committed to his country and his community, Jack
Brough lived a full and generous life, and his civic leadership
benefited immeasurably his adopted home in the Lone Star State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Alexander Brough
and offer sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
longtime companion, Jimmie Lee Huckins; to his daughter, Pamela L.
Matthews, and Thomas Slagel; to his granddaughters, Donna Duncan,
Linda Friedel, Sandy Whetstone, and Catherine Mosley; to his
grandson, Ryan James Matthews; to his great-grandchildren,
Jessica, Colleen, Paige, Adam, and Sydney; to his niece, Dode
Ackermann; to his great-nieces, Margaret and Diane; and to his
other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alexander
"Jack" Brough.
