5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever hold dear their
6	6	memories of Alexander Brough of Kerrville, who died on September
7	7	19, 2007, at the age of 97; and
8	8	WHEREAS, "Jack" Brough was born in Chicago on August 4, 1910,
9	9	to James Alexander Brough and Ella Waffle Brough; as a young man, he
10	10	taught himself to fly without formal instruction, soloing for the
11	11	first time in 1928 in Evergreen Park, Illinois; he entered the
12	12	aviation industry in 1933, when he took a job with Braniff Airways
13	13	at Chicago Municipal Airport; and
14	14	WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Brough served his nation in
15	15	the United States Army Air Forces as a contracting officer for the
16	16	United States Air Transport Command; he received a commission as a
17	17	brigadier general in 1942 and held the rank until he was
18	18	decommissioned in 1945; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Over the course of a distinguished civilian career,
20	20	Mr. Brough served as an executive vice president for both Trans
21	21	World Airlines and the RCA/Hertz Corporation; he lived in Chicago,
22	22	New York City, Kansas City, and Dallas, and his business took him to
23	23	six of the world's seven continents; and
24	24	WHEREAS, After retiring in 1977, Mr. Brough settled in
25	25	Kerrville, where he became an active member of the community; he
26	26	chaired the city-county airport board from 1978 to 1982 and
27	27	subsequently served as a member of the city council from 1982 to
28	28	1988 and as mayor of Kerrville from 1984 to 1988; and
29	29	WHEREAS, This energetic and caring man was also a member of
30	30	the Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club, a volunteer with the United Way,
31	31	and a member and vice president of the Upper Guadalupe River
32	32	Authority Board of Directors; for his contributions to Kerrville
33	33	and the surrounding area, he was recognized by the city council in
34	34	1990 as an Outstanding Citizen; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Mr. Brough never lost his love of aviation, and
36	36	throughout his life he continued to take pride in his military
37	37	service; he held membership in the OX5 Aviation Pioneers, the
38	38	Military Officers Association of America, and the Air Force
39	39	Association; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Committed to his country and his community, Jack
41	41	Brough lived a full and generous life, and his civic leadership
42	42	benefited immeasurably his adopted home in the Lone Star State;
43	43	now, therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
45	45	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Alexander Brough
46	46	and offer sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
47	47	longtime companion, Jimmie Lee Huckins; to his daughter, Pamela L.
48	48	Matthews, and Thomas Slagel; to his granddaughters, Donna Duncan,
49	49	Linda Friedel, Sandy Whetstone, and Catherine Mosley; to his
50	50	grandson, Ryan James Matthews; to his great-grandchildren,
51	51	Jessica, Colleen, Paige, Adam, and Sydney; to his niece, Dode
52	52	Ackermann; to his great-nieces, Margaret and Diane; and to his
53	53	other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
54	54	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
55	55	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
56	56	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alexander
57	57	"Jack" Brough.
