5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The mock trial team from Skyline High School in |

6 | 6 | | Dallas won the 30th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition |

7 | 7 | | over the weekend of March 7-8, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Established by the Dallas Bar Association in 1979 as |
---|
9 | 9 | | a citywide competition, the contest was expanded in 1980 to include |
---|
10 | 10 | | teams from around the state of Texas; more than 4,500 students from |
---|
11 | 11 | | over 200 Texas schools participate each year; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In this year's competition, 24 teams from public and |
---|
13 | 13 | | private schools around the state were selected to participate by |
---|
14 | 14 | | 200 judges and attorneys from the Dallas area; each team of 7 to 10 |
---|
15 | 15 | | students was presented with a case packet containing the |
---|
16 | 16 | | particulars of the trial and given two hours to try the case before |
---|
17 | 17 | | the judges; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The first team from Dallas to win the statewide |
---|
19 | 19 | | competition in 19 years, the Skyline team included Lauren Burgess, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Morgan Burgess, Countess Dudley, Marissa Escamilla, Allyson |
---|
21 | 21 | | LaFrance, Obed Manuel, Salvador Ortega, Cristian Perez, Diane |
---|
22 | 22 | | Rivas, and Courtney Sanders, as well as alternate members Cendy |
---|
23 | 23 | | Rodriguez, Susana Ayala, John Sanchez, and Maria Renteria; they |

24 | 24 | | were ably supported by coaches Joe Wicker and Dr. Martha Williams, |
---|
25 | 25 | | and their victory in Dallas qualifies them to participate in the |
---|
26 | 26 | | national mock trial competition in Atlanta, Georgia, in May; and |

27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The continuing vitality of the legal profession in |
---|
28 | 28 | | Texas depends in large part on the enthusiasm of young people for |
---|
29 | 29 | | the study of the law and the pursuit of justice, and the members of |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Skyline High School mock trial team may take great pride in |
---|
31 | 31 | | their talent, hard work, and passion for the law; now, therefore, be |

33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Skyline High |
