55 WHEREAS, Through his notable contributions to his community
66 and to the field of public health, Dr. George Benavidez of Corpus
77 Christi has helped to ensure a brighter future for countless Gulf
88 Coast residents; and
99 WHEREAS, A graduate of the University of New Mexico School of
1010 Pharmacy, Dr. Benavidez was active in a number of campus
1111 organizations while pursuing his undergraduate studies; in
1212 addition to his membership in the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical
1313 Fraternity and Rho Chi Society, he was elected class president and
1414 served as director of Project Porvenir, which provided vital
1515 medical services to areas in need; and
1616 WHEREAS, Dr. Benavidez earned both a Kappa Psi Scholarship
1717 and an Upjohn Scholarship, and after his graduation in 1974, he
1818 enrolled in the University of New Mexico School of Medicine where he
1919 received a National Health Service Corps Scholarship; he continued
2020 his medical training by completing a Texas Family Practice
2121 Residency in 1981, at The University of Texas Health Science
2222 Center; and
2323 WHEREAS, Dr. Benavidez has enjoyed a successful inpatient and
2424 outpatient practice for 28 years; he is currently affiliated with
2525 the Thomas-Spann Clinic, the HCA/Columbia Hospital System, and the
2626 Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi; and
2727 WHEREAS, Certified to practice family medicine, he
2828 additionally is an expert in the treatment and evaluation of
2929 critically ill or traumatized patients; he is a member of the
3030 American Academy of Family Physicians, American Board of Emergency
3131 Medicine, American Medical Association, American Heart
3232 Association, SIDS Foundation, and National Kidney Foundation; also
3333 a valued member of the Nueces County Medical Society, he has served
3434 the group on the Executive Board and Malpractice/Tort Reform Task
3535 Force and as chair of Day of Awareness II and co-chair of the
3636 Centennial Celebration; and
3737 WHEREAS, Among his many achievements, Dr. Benavidez has been
3838 honored with awards from the American Medical Association and the
3939 American Academy of Family Physicians; and
4040 WHEREAS, Dr. George Benavidez is an outstanding physician
4141 whose commitment to his patients, his community, and his profession
4242 is truly exemplary, and he is most deserving of special
4343 recognition; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4545 Legislature hereby honor Dr. George Benavidez for his professional
4646 accomplishments and dedication to excellence and extend to him
4747 sincere best wishes for continued success with his important work;
4848 and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for Dr. Benavidez as an expression of high regard by the
5151 Texas House of Representatives.
