No. 1313 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The fifth biennial Carolyn Garrett Legislative Leadership Conference is being held in Austin on April 25-27, 2009; and WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas chapter of the American Council of the Blind and the Division for Blind Services of the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, the event pays tribute to the late Carolyn Marie Garrett, an inspiring advocate who served on the board of directors of the Texas Commission for the Blind and as president of the Houston chapter of the American Council of the Blind; and WHEREAS, Building on Mrs. Garrett's legacy of improving the quality of life for blind residents of Texas, the conference promotes confidence and independence among blind youth, seeking to empower them as advocates for themselves and encouraging them to pursue their goals through education and employment opportunities; based on essays that they wrote about issues they considered critical, 30 high school students from throughout the state were selected to participate in the event, which also includes informative sessions, visits with state legislators, and social activities; and WHEREAS, With the theme, "Advocating to Win," the Carolyn Garrett Legislative Leadership Conference is helping young Texans realize their full potential, and in so doing, it is also contributing to the greater community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Carolyn Garrett Legislative Leadership Conference and extend to its organizers and attendees sincere best wishes for a memorable and educational experience; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Texas chapter of the American Council of the Blind and the Division for Blind Services of the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
