5	5	WHEREAS, A group from The University of Texas Health Science
6	6	Center at San Antonio is visiting the State Capitol on April 29,
7	7	2009, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the legislation that
8	8	established this outstanding institution; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Originally known as the South Texas Medical School,
10	10	UTHSC at San Antonio was established with the passage of House Bill
11	11	9 on April 29, 1959, and subsequently funded through a combination
12	12	of state and federal money; the School of Medicine and an adjacent
13	13	teaching hospital opened in 1968 and were soon followed by the
14	14	School of Nursing and the Dental School; the school became one of
15	15	four UT Health Science Centers created by the UT System Board of
16	16	Regents in the early 1970s and was later expanded to include the
17	17	Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Health
18	18	Professions; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Today, UTHSC at San Antonio also educates students
20	20	at the Laredo Campus Extension and the Regional Academic Health
21	21	Center Medical Education Division in Harlingen; more than 25,600
22	22	students have graduated from the center since its inception; and
23	23	WHEREAS, UTHSC at San Antonio is further distinguished as the
24	24	premiere research institution in South Texas and includes the RAHC
25	25	Medical Research Division in Edinburg and the Greehey Children's
26	26	Cancer Research Institute in San Antonio; its faculty are
27	27	international leaders in such fields as cancer, cardiovascular
28	28	disease, diabetes, stroke prevention, kidney disease, transplant
29	29	surgery, psychiatry and clinical neurosciences, and dentistry;
30	30	among the innovations developed at the school are the Palmaz Stent,
31	31	the first stent used with angioplasty to keep open coronary and
32	32	peripheral arteries, the Titanium Rib, a prosthetic device for
33	33	children born with malformed chest walls, and EZ-IO, an alternative
34	34	infusion technique; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Employing some 5,000 Texans, UTHSC at San Antonio
36	36	positively impacts the economies of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and
37	37	San Antonio, where it significantly contributes to the
38	38	multi-billion-dollar biosciences and health care sector; through
39	39	the years, the center has been skillfully led by Dr. Frank Harrison,
40	40	Dr. John Howe, and Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa, and Dr. William L.
41	41	Henrich has served as interim president since 2008; and
42	42	WHEREAS, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San
43	43	Antonio provides its students with an exceptional education and a
44	44	solid foundation for future success, and in so doing, it
45	45	contributes to the continued success and prosperity of the Lone
46	46	Star State; now, therefore, be it
47	47	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
48	48	Legislature hereby recognize April 29, 2009, as The University of
49	49	Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Day at the State Capitol
50	50	and extend a warm welcome to all those from the center who are
51	51	visiting here today; and, be it further
52	52	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
53	53	prepared for The University of Texas Health Science Center at San
54	54	Antonio as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
55	55	Representatives.
