| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Veteran bareback rodeo rider Rusty Riddle of Vernon |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | has been inducted into the 2009 class of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of Fame; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Growing up on a dairy farm near Weatherford, Mr. |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Riddle first became interested in rodeo riding after visiting a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | high school rodeo in Hillsboro; he left home at age 16 to work for a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | stock contractor, and his job gave him the opportunity to begin |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | practicing the sport of bareback riding; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1969, at the age of 18, Mr. Riddle earned his |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | rodeo permit, and the following year, he became a member of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and joined the professional |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | rodeo circuit; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Riddle was a serious contender in bareback |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | riding from the early days of his professional career, winning the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | title at the Cheyenne Rodeo in 1972 and at the Houston Rodeo in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 1975; he also took first place three times at the Fort Worth Rodeo; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, An injury kept him from reaching the National Finals |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Rodeo in 1971, but Mr. Riddle made his debut at the NFR the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | following year; even though he competed with his arm in a cast, he |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | placed on five horses and finished fourth in the average standings; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | so began eight consecutive appearances at the NFR, and during those |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | rodeos, he rode a total of 80 horses and was bucked off of only one |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of them; moreover, from 1972 to 1975, he battled Joe Alexander for |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the world championship in bareback riding, finishing as runner-up |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | each year; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Rusty Riddle's skill and dedication made him one of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the leading rodeo riders of his generation and an inspiration to |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | younger competitors, and he is truly deserving of this prestigious |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | recognition from his peers; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Rusty Riddle on his induction into |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and extend to him sincere best wishes |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | for continued happiness; and, be it further |
