5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, U.S. Army Specialist Mario Luis Lopez, Jr., of Alice |

6 | 6 | | has returned home to the United States after risking his life in |

7 | 7 | | service to his country and sustaining serious combat injuries in |
---|
8 | 8 | | Afghanistan; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez attended Alice High School, where he was a |
---|
10 | 10 | | cross-country runner; after graduating in 2003, this brave young |
---|
11 | 11 | | man answered his nation's call to duty and enlisted in the U.S. |
---|
12 | 12 | | Army; assigned to the 68th Engineering Platoon of the 32nd Infantry |
---|
13 | 13 | | Division based at Fort Hood, he was deployed to Afghanistan in March |
---|
14 | 14 | | 2008; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Specialist Lopez was wounded by an improvised |
---|
16 | 16 | | explosive device that also injured six of his fellow soldiers; he |
---|
17 | 17 | | narrowly escaped with his life and has undergone medical treatment |
---|
18 | 18 | | at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and at Landstuhl Regional Medical |
---|
19 | 19 | | Center in Germany; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Now recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center in San |
---|
21 | 21 | | Antonio, Specialist Lopez draws strength from the love and support |
---|
22 | 22 | | of his wife, Josie, and his children, Aalyah and Jayden, as well as |
---|
23 | 23 | | from his mother, Lily Cash, his father, Mario Luis Lopez, Sr., and |
---|
24 | 24 | | his three siblings; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt to our nation's |
---|
26 | 26 | | servicemen and servicewomen, for they are called on to bear great, |
---|
27 | 27 | | often unimaginable burdens, and they render service and sacrifice |
---|
28 | 28 | | that are truly beyond measure; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Through his dedication to duty, honor, and this |
---|
30 | 30 | | country, Mario Luis Lopez, Jr., has embodied the highest ideals of |
---|
31 | 31 | | the U.S. armed forces and earned the lasting respect and gratitude |
---|
32 | 32 | | of all who know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby honor U.S. Army Specialist Mario Luis Lopez, |

35 | 35 | | Jr., for his courageous service in Afghanistan and extend to him |

36 | 36 | | sincere best wishes for his continuing recovery; and, be it further |
