| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Citizens from Denton County are gathering in Austin |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on February 9-10, 2009, to celebrate Denton County Days at the State |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located in North Texas, Denton County is bordered to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the east by Collin County and to the northeast by Grayson County, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and residents of all three are also commemorating Tri-County Days |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Denton County was created by the Texas Legislature |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | in 1846 and named for pioneer preacher, lawyer, and soldier John |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Bunyan Denton; the early years of the county saw its emergence as an |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | agricultural center, and the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | ensured that the area's wheat and cotton would find distribution |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | across the country; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The county is home to the University of North Texas |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and Texas Woman's University, which were founded as Texas Normal |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | College and Girls' Industrial College in 1890 and 1903, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | respectively, as well as a campus of North Central Texas College, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and the alumni of these schools have gone on to make their mark on |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the history of Texas and the nation; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Further attractions in the Denton area include the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | beauty of the North Texas Greenbelt, the architecture of the Denton |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | County Courthouse-on-the-Square, and the action of the Texas Motor |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Speedway; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history even as they work to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | build a bright future, the citizens of Denton County are |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is most fitting to take |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | this opportunity to honor their contribution to the story of the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 9-10, 2009, as Denton County |

| 35 | 35 | | Days at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the members of |

| 36 | 36 | | the visiting delegation for an enjoyable and memorable stay in |
