44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Johnny L. Sessums of Houston has distinguished
66 himself through his outstanding service to his community; and
77 WHEREAS, This native Texan was born in Hearne on August 30,
88 1952, to John E. Sessums and Flora E. Sessums; he went on to receive
99 associate's degrees from Blinn College and Houston Community
1010 College, and he graduated from the City of Houston Police Academy in
1111 1973; he later resumed his studies, earning a bachelor's degree in
1212 criminal justice management from Midwestern State University in
1313 2003 and a master's degree from the University of Houston in 2005;
1414 and
1515 WHEREAS, A retired Houston police officer, Mr. Sessums was
1616 recruited in 1988 to assist with the development of the police
1717 academy at Houston Community College, and he was the primary
1818 instructor and coordinator of its first class in 1989; today he
1919 serves as director of the Public Safety Institute at HCC Northeast,
2020 a program that was created with the goal of establishing a facility
2121 where fire, police, and EMS personnel could train together and
2222 learn to work cooperatively; and
2323 WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Sessums has been instrumental
2424 to the growth and development of the HCC program, which now offers
2525 instruction in criminal justice and police science, fire
2626 protection, and fire science and firefighting, including basic
2727 academy training, licensing, and continuing education; it has also
2828 built vital partnerships with such local institutions as the
2929 Houston Fire Department, and it is rated number one in the region
3030 for its first attempt passing rates on licensing exams; committed
3131 to training qualified individuals who will protect the well-being
3232 of the citizens of Texas, he has sought to maintain the highest
3333 standards in educating these public servants and in helping them
3434 succeed; and
3535 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Sessums enjoys the love
3636 and support of his wife, Catherine Ann Hicks-Sessums, whom he
3737 married in 1996, and he takes great pride in his two children,
3838 Dallas Lee Sessums and Scott Joseph Sessums, and his three
3939 grandchildren; and
4040 WHEREAS, Johnny Sessums has demonstrated an unwavering
4141 commitment to public safety and education over the course of his
4242 career, and his notable achievements and contributions indeed merit
4343 special recognition; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4545 Legislature hereby commend Johnny L. Sessums for his exemplary
4646 efforts in behalf of his fellow citizens and extend to him sincere
4747 best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for Mr. Sessums as an expression of high regard by the
5050 Texas House of Representatives.
