5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Johnny L. Sessums of Houston has distinguished |
---|
6 | 6 | | himself through his outstanding service to his community; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, This native Texan was born in Hearne on August 30, |
---|
8 | 8 | | 1952, to John E. Sessums and Flora E. Sessums; he went on to receive |
---|
9 | 9 | | associate's degrees from Blinn College and Houston Community |
---|
10 | 10 | | College, and he graduated from the City of Houston Police Academy in |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1973; he later resumed his studies, earning a bachelor's degree in |
---|
12 | 12 | | criminal justice management from Midwestern State University in |
---|
13 | 13 | | 2003 and a master's degree from the University of Houston in 2005; |
---|
14 | 14 | | and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A retired Houston police officer, Mr. Sessums was |
---|
16 | 16 | | recruited in 1988 to assist with the development of the police |
---|
17 | 17 | | academy at Houston Community College, and he was the primary |
---|
18 | 18 | | instructor and coordinator of its first class in 1989; today he |
---|
19 | 19 | | serves as director of the Public Safety Institute at HCC Northeast, |
---|
20 | 20 | | a program that was created with the goal of establishing a facility |
---|
21 | 21 | | where fire, police, and EMS personnel could train together and |
---|
22 | 22 | | learn to work cooperatively; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Sessums has been instrumental |
---|
24 | 24 | | to the growth and development of the HCC program, which now offers |
---|
25 | 25 | | instruction in criminal justice and police science, fire |
---|
26 | 26 | | protection, and fire science and firefighting, including basic |
---|
27 | 27 | | academy training, licensing, and continuing education; it has also |
---|
28 | 28 | | built vital partnerships with such local institutions as the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Houston Fire Department, and it is rated number one in the region |
---|
30 | 30 | | for its first attempt passing rates on licensing exams; committed |
---|
31 | 31 | | to training qualified individuals who will protect the well-being |
---|
32 | 32 | | of the citizens of Texas, he has sought to maintain the highest |
---|
33 | 33 | | standards in educating these public servants and in helping them |
---|
34 | 34 | | succeed; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Sessums enjoys the love |
---|
36 | 36 | | and support of his wife, Catherine Ann Hicks-Sessums, whom he |
---|
37 | 37 | | married in 1996, and he takes great pride in his two children, |
---|
38 | 38 | | Dallas Lee Sessums and Scott Joseph Sessums, and his three |
---|
39 | 39 | | grandchildren; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Johnny Sessums has demonstrated an unwavering |
---|
41 | 41 | | commitment to public safety and education over the course of his |
---|
42 | 42 | | career, and his notable achievements and contributions indeed merit |
---|
43 | 43 | | special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature hereby commend Johnny L. Sessums for his exemplary |
---|
46 | 46 | | efforts in behalf of his fellow citizens and extend to him sincere |
---|
47 | 47 | | best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
