5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Burnet County are gathering in |

6 | 6 | | Austin on April 23, 2009, to celebrate Burnet County Day at the |
---|
7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Situated among the scenic lakes and hills of the |
---|
9 | 9 | | Texas Hill Country, Burnet County was organized by the 4th Texas |
---|
10 | 10 | | Legislature in 1852 and named for David G. Burnet, president of the |
---|
11 | 11 | | provisional government of the Republic of Texas; the county seat |
---|
12 | 12 | | was established in the town of Hamilton, which changed its name to |
---|
13 | 13 | | Burnet in 1858; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The county's economy was originally dependent on |
---|
15 | 15 | | agriculture, but the harnessing of the Colorado River by the Lower |
---|
16 | 16 | | Colorado River Authority beginning in the 1930s and the creation of |
---|
17 | 17 | | the Highland Lakes helped turn Burnet County into a popular |
---|
18 | 18 | | recreational and vacation destination, and residents and visitors |
---|
19 | 19 | | from all across the Lone Star State enjoy swimming, boating, |
---|
20 | 20 | | fishing, and camping on Lakes Buchanan, Inks, Lyndon B. Johnson, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and Travis; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Bird-watchers and amateur astronomers are drawn by |
---|
23 | 23 | | the Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park; the Hill Country Flyer train |
---|
24 | 24 | | ride and the Vanishing Texas River Cruise offer tours of the |
---|
25 | 25 | | county's scenic wonders, and visitors to Longhorn Cavern State Park |
---|
26 | 26 | | delight in the scenic grottoes and rich history of this unique |
---|
27 | 27 | | attraction; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The vast dome of Granite Mountain supplied the stone |
---|
29 | 29 | | used in the construction of the State Capitol and a number of state |
---|
30 | 30 | | office buildings and county courthouses, as well as for the |
---|
31 | 31 | | Galveston seawall; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Texas Tech University at Highland Lakes and Central |
---|
33 | 33 | | Texas College provide opportunities for higher education for the |
---|
34 | 34 | | rapidly growing population in the area, and the Fort Croghan Museum |
---|
35 | 35 | | in Burnet and the Falls on the Colorado Museum in Marble Falls help |
---|
36 | 36 | | to preserve the county's heritage; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with a region of great beauty and a rich |
---|
38 | 38 | | history, the residents of Burnet County may take great pride in |
---|
39 | 39 | | their unique contribution to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
40 | 40 | | therefore, be it |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 23, 2009, as Burnet County Day |

43 | 43 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
