44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Burnet County are gathering in
66 Austin on April 23, 2009, to celebrate Burnet County Day at the
77 State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, Situated among the scenic lakes and hills of the
99 Texas Hill Country, Burnet County was organized by the 4th Texas
1010 Legislature in 1852 and named for David G. Burnet, president of the
1111 provisional government of the Republic of Texas; the county seat
1212 was established in the town of Hamilton, which changed its name to
1313 Burnet in 1858; and
1414 WHEREAS, The county's economy was originally dependent on
1515 agriculture, but the harnessing of the Colorado River by the Lower
1616 Colorado River Authority beginning in the 1930s and the creation of
1717 the Highland Lakes helped turn Burnet County into a popular
1818 recreational and vacation destination, and residents and visitors
1919 from all across the Lone Star State enjoy swimming, boating,
2020 fishing, and camping on Lakes Buchanan, Inks, Lyndon B. Johnson,
2121 and Travis; and
2222 WHEREAS, Bird-watchers and amateur astronomers are drawn by
2323 the Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park; the Hill Country Flyer train
2424 ride and the Vanishing Texas River Cruise offer tours of the
2525 county's scenic wonders, and visitors to Longhorn Cavern State Park
2626 delight in the scenic grottoes and rich history of this unique
2727 attraction; and
2828 WHEREAS, The vast dome of Granite Mountain supplied the stone
2929 used in the construction of the State Capitol and a number of state
3030 office buildings and county courthouses, as well as for the
3131 Galveston seawall; and
3232 WHEREAS, Texas Tech University at Highland Lakes and Central
3333 Texas College provide opportunities for higher education for the
3434 rapidly growing population in the area, and the Fort Croghan Museum
3535 in Burnet and the Falls on the Colorado Museum in Marble Falls help
3636 to preserve the county's heritage; and
3737 WHEREAS, Blessed with a region of great beauty and a rich
3838 history, the residents of Burnet County may take great pride in
3939 their unique contribution to the story of the Lone Star State; now,
4040 therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4242 Legislature hereby recognize April 23, 2009, as Burnet County Day
4343 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
4444 best wishes for an informative and enjoyable visit to Austin.
