44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of East Texas lost a beloved neighbor and
66 admired community leader with the passing of Judge Drew O'Neal
77 Bacon of Newton on February 5, 2009, at the age of 88; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of the Lone Star State, Drew Bacon was born
99 on May 16, 1920, in Gilmer; he graduated from Frankston High School
1010 and served with the 85th Seabee Battalion during World War II before
1111 attending The University of Texas, where he earned degrees in
1212 business administration and law; and
1313 WHEREAS, He began his distinguished legal career in private
1414 practice, and in 1957 he was elected district attorney of the 1st
1515 Judicial District of Texas; appointed state district judge two
1616 years later, he served in that capacity for three decades; and
1717 WHEREAS, Judge Bacon's career was marked by many major
1818 accomplishments, including contributions to Stayton's Form Book
1919 and the Texas Bar Journal and appearances as a lecturer for the
2020 Committee on Continuing Legal Education for the State Bar of Texas;
2121 and
2222 WHEREAS, This notable jurist was a member of the Judicial
2323 Section of the State Bar of Texas, chair of the Committee on Uniform
2424 Court Rules, charter fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and the
2525 International Academy of Trial Judges, and founding president of
2626 the American Law Students Association and the 1st Judicial District
2727 Bar Association, of which he was also a life member; and
2828 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Judge Bacon shared his time
2929 with the Three Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the
3030 Lion's Club, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the
3131 Newton Independent School District Board; in addition, he was a
3232 68-year member of the Masonic Lodges in Newton and Frankston; and
3333 WHEREAS, Married to his beloved wife of 65 years, Sue Cole
3434 Bacon, Judge Bacon was known for his devotion to his country, the
3535 law, and his family, and he leaves a legacy of service and
3636 achievements that will continue to benefit Texas for years to come;
3737 now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Judge Drew O'Neal
4040 Bacon and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
4141 his wife, Sue Cole Bacon; to his children, Drew O'Neal Bacon, Jr.,
4242 and his wife, Michelle, Sylvia Bacon Thompson and her husband,
4343 Randy, DeLayne Bacon Pascal, and Roger Howard Bacon and his wife,
4444 Karla; to his grandchildren, Davasha, Micayla, and Drew "Trey"
4545 O'Neal Bacon III, Tara Thompson Cosgrove and her husband, Ryan,
4646 Devon Thompson McCall and her husband, Chris, Alexis Pascal, and
4747 Lawren and Brittny Bacon; to his brother, Billy Bacon, and his wife,
4848 Pattye; and to all those who mourn his passing; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5151 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge Drew
5252 O'Neal Bacon.
