| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Rodney Smith of Grapevine was named the 2008 Senior |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Fest Veteran of the Year by the Women's Division of the Grapevine |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Chamber of Commerce; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In 1951, Mr. Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | began his basic training at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; he attained |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the permanent rank of E-6 in less than two years and reached a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | temporary rank of E-9; this dedicated soldier served his entire |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | military career with the 7th Army, 77th AAA Division, 7th AAA |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Battalion, C Company, attached to the 25th Infantry Division; he |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | worked as a communications chief and a fire director with ground |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | support to the navy and air force; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smith earned numerous commendations during his |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | years in uniform, among them the Good Conduct Medal with clusters, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the American Campaign Medal, the American Defense Commemorative |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Medal, and the National Defense Medal; his assignments took him |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | around the world, and he spent time in the Philippines, Japan, South |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Korea, Germany, and many other locales both stateside and abroad |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | before his retirement at the age of 56; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Since concluding his military career, Mr. Smith has |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | been active in veterans organizations and is a life member of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | American Veterans; in all of his endeavors, he has enjoyed the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | support of his wife of more than 50 years, Peggy, and the devoted |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | couple have been blessed with three daughters, seven grandchildren, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and two great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a debt of gratitude to those who have |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | answered the nation's call to duty, and it is indeed a pleasure to |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | recognize Rodney Smith for his years of valiant service, for his |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | personal sacrifice, and for his enduring patriotism; now, |

| 34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Rodney Smith on being named the |

| 37 | 37 | | 2008 Senior Fest Veteran of the Year by the Women's Division of the |

| 38 | 38 | | Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and extend to him sincere best wishes |
