55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Steve
77 Wright Sterquell of Amarillo, who died on April 1, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, Steve Sterquell was born on February 6, 1953; after
99 graduating from Texas Tech University with a business degree in
1010 1974, he became a certified public accountant and was a partner in
1111 Sterquell Hill & Goelzer, LLP; and
1212 WHEREAS, In 1989, Mr. Sterquell established American Housing
1313 Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating housing
1414 for low- and moderate-income families and individuals, and in 1995,
1515 he sold his accounting practice to focus on this worthwhile
1616 endeavor; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Sterquell's foundation has grown in the years
1818 since to manage and maintain more than 14,000 units in 33 cities in
1919 9 states; in recent years, he had worked with the Texas State
2020 Affordable Housing Corporation to acquire more units, and recently
2121 he had begun creating affordable housing for seniors; and
2222 WHEREAS, A leader in his profession, Mr. Sterquell taught
2323 courses in taxation, low-income housing credits, estate planning,
2424 and other subjects; he also found time to serve as chair and
2525 president of the Kiwanis Foundation, chair of the Children's
2626 Miracle Network Telethon, and president of the Children's Health
2727 Foundation, and he worked with Goodwill Industries, the Amarillo
2828 Community Center, and many other organizations; and
2929 WHEREAS, For his many contributions to the community, Mr.
3030 Sterquell received numerous honors, including the James E. West
3131 Fellowship Award and the William O. Stillman Award from the
3232 National Humane Society, and he was named an Alumnus by Choice of
3333 Baylor University and a Boy Scout Heritage Society Lifetime Member;
3434 and
3535 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and
3636 support of his wife, Marshallette, to whom he was married for 34
3737 years, and their children, Steve and Elizabeth; and
3838 WHEREAS, Steve Sterquell was a compassionate and committed
3939 member of his community, and although his life ended far too soon,
4040 he will forever be remembered with great admiration and affection;
4141 now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Steve Wright
4444 Sterquell and extend sincere condolences to the members of his
4545 family: to his wife, Marshallette S. Sterquell; to his children,
4646 Steve W. Sterquell II and his wife, Holly, and Elizabeth A. Bunn and
4747 her husband, Larry; to his grandchildren, Katherine R. Sterquell,
4848 Luke W. Sterquell, and Benjamin C. Bunn; to his mother, Betty W.
4949 Sterquell; to his brother, John C. Sterquell; to his sister, Vicki
5050 S. Sterquell; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it

5252 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5353 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5454 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Steve
5555 Sterquell.
