6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Steve |
---|
7 | 7 | | Wright Sterquell of Amarillo, who died on April 1, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Steve Sterquell was born on February 6, 1953; after |
---|
9 | 9 | | graduating from Texas Tech University with a business degree in |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1974, he became a certified public accountant and was a partner in |
---|
11 | 11 | | Sterquell Hill & Goelzer, LLP; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1989, Mr. Sterquell established American Housing |
---|
13 | 13 | | Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating housing |
---|
14 | 14 | | for low- and moderate-income families and individuals, and in 1995, |
---|
15 | 15 | | he sold his accounting practice to focus on this worthwhile |
---|
16 | 16 | | endeavor; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sterquell's foundation has grown in the years |
---|
18 | 18 | | since to manage and maintain more than 14,000 units in 33 cities in |
---|
19 | 19 | | 9 states; in recent years, he had worked with the Texas State |
---|
20 | 20 | | Affordable Housing Corporation to acquire more units, and recently |
---|
21 | 21 | | he had begun creating affordable housing for seniors; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, A leader in his profession, Mr. Sterquell taught |
---|
23 | 23 | | courses in taxation, low-income housing credits, estate planning, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and other subjects; he also found time to serve as chair and |
---|
25 | 25 | | president of the Kiwanis Foundation, chair of the Children's |
---|
26 | 26 | | Miracle Network Telethon, and president of the Children's Health |
---|
27 | 27 | | Foundation, and he worked with Goodwill Industries, the Amarillo |
---|
28 | 28 | | Community Center, and many other organizations; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, For his many contributions to the community, Mr. |
---|
30 | 30 | | Sterquell received numerous honors, including the James E. West |
---|
31 | 31 | | Fellowship Award and the William O. Stillman Award from the |
---|
32 | 32 | | National Humane Society, and he was named an Alumnus by Choice of |
---|
33 | 33 | | Baylor University and a Boy Scout Heritage Society Lifetime Member; |
---|
34 | 34 | | and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and |
---|
36 | 36 | | support of his wife, Marshallette, to whom he was married for 34 |
---|
37 | 37 | | years, and their children, Steve and Elizabeth; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Steve Sterquell was a compassionate and committed |
---|
39 | 39 | | member of his community, and although his life ended far too soon, |
---|
40 | 40 | | he will forever be remembered with great admiration and affection; |
---|
41 | 41 | | now, therefore, be it |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Steve Wright |

44 | 44 | | Sterquell and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |

45 | 45 | | family: to his wife, Marshallette S. Sterquell; to his children, |

46 | 46 | | Steve W. Sterquell II and his wife, Holly, and Elizabeth A. Bunn and |

47 | 47 | | her husband, Larry; to his grandchildren, Katherine R. Sterquell, |
