5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Lynn Whitten was named Woman of the Year by |
---|
6 | 6 | | Executive Women in Texas Government at the organization's annual |
---|
7 | 7 | | conference on November 24, 2008; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The eldest of four children, Lynn Whitten was born |
---|
9 | 9 | | in San Antonio and spent her youth in Dallas and in Austin; she |
---|
10 | 10 | | graduated from Austin High School and performed with Ballet Austin |
---|
11 | 11 | | before earning a bachelor's degree in history and a certificate in |
---|
12 | 12 | | social work from The University of Texas at Austin; she later worked |
---|
13 | 13 | | as an assistant sergeant-at-arms for the Texas House of |
---|
14 | 14 | | Representatives and served as a deputy constable for Travis County |
---|
15 | 15 | | from 1977 to 1981; in addition, she volunteered for voter |
---|
16 | 16 | | registration drives and political campaigns, and she worked for Ann |
---|
17 | 17 | | Richards during the future governor's tenure as Travis County |
---|
18 | 18 | | commissioner in the early 1980s; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1983, Ms. Whitten earned a master's degree from |
---|
20 | 20 | | the L.B.J. School of Public Affairs at U.T.; her career in state |
---|
21 | 21 | | government began when she took a position as a systems analyst for |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Railroad Commission; she went on to serve the State Treasury and |
---|
23 | 23 | | the Comptroller of Public Accounts and held a variety of positions |
---|
24 | 24 | | with those agencies, including executive administrator, business |
---|
25 | 25 | | manager, quality assurance specialist, and contingency planning |
---|
26 | 26 | | coordinator; she is currently employed by the Department of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Information Resources, Technical Center Operations Division, as a |
---|
28 | 28 | | service representative on the Data Center Services consolidation |
---|
29 | 29 | | project; over the course of her years in state government, she has |
---|
30 | 30 | | developed significant expertise in the areas of large-scale project |
---|
31 | 31 | | management and process improvement; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Despite her busy professional life, Ms. Whitten has |
---|
33 | 33 | | found time to devote to her community; in addition to working on |
---|
34 | 34 | | numerous political initiatives, she has served on the Austin |
---|
35 | 35 | | Tenants' Council Board for more than two decades; she is also a 2001 |
---|
36 | 36 | | graduate of Leadership Texas and has remained active in its alumni |
---|
37 | 37 | | association; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed citizen has further distinguished |
---|
39 | 39 | | herself through her commitment to Executive Women in Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Government, which she joined in 1996, and she has contributed to the |
---|
41 | 41 | | organization in myriad ways; she was the chair of the Nominating |
---|
42 | 42 | | Committee for the 2009 Board of Directors, and she has had such |
---|
43 | 43 | | additional roles as president of the board in 2003, communications |
---|
44 | 44 | | director in 1999 and 2006, and advisor to the board in 2007; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, In all of her endeavors, Ms. Whitten enjoys the love |
---|
46 | 46 | | and support of her husband of more than 20 years, Jim Butler; she |
---|
47 | 47 | | takes great pleasure in gardening, traveling, the arts, and zydeco |
---|
48 | 48 | | dancing, and she is an avid fan of the Austin music scene; and |
---|
49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Through her exceptional professional achievements |
---|
50 | 50 | | and her enduring efforts in behalf of her colleagues and community, |
---|
51 | 51 | | Lynn Whitten has demonstrated passion, integrity, and dedication, |
---|
52 | 52 | | and in so doing, she has set an inspiring example of civic |
---|
53 | 53 | | leadership for her fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it |
---|
54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
55 | 55 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Lynn Whitten on being named the |
---|
56 | 56 | | 2008 Woman of the Year by Executive Women in Texas Government and |
---|
57 | 57 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it |
