5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The community organization La Mujer Obrera is |

6 | 6 | | working to create jobs and sustainable economic opportunity for |

7 | 7 | | low-income women workers in El Paso with its ambitious Centro |

8 | 8 | | Mayapan Festival Marketplace project; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1981, La Mujer Obrera is dedicated to |
---|
10 | 10 | | fostering empowerment and employment with dignity for women of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Mexican heritage and their families; it is also working to |
---|
12 | 12 | | revitalize South Central El Paso by providing basic skills and |
---|
13 | 13 | | vocational experience for women and helping them navigate the |
---|
14 | 14 | | requirements for employment and the development of small |
---|
15 | 15 | | businesses; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Anchoring this effort is Centro Mayapan, a unique |
---|
17 | 17 | | festival marketplace housed in a renovated 40,000-square-foot |
---|
18 | 18 | | warehouse and encompassing a wide range of businesses, community |
---|
19 | 19 | | services, and cultural opportunities; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The center's Mercado Mayapan will be a vibrant |
---|
21 | 21 | | indoor space for food vendors, artisans, and other |
---|
22 | 22 | | microenterprises; a vital center for Mexican culture, Plaza |
---|
23 | 23 | | Cultural will specialize in performances and exhibitions by |
---|
24 | 24 | | dancers, musicians, and artists from both sides of the border, |
---|
25 | 25 | | while the Museo Mayachen will feature permanent exhibits about the |
---|
26 | 26 | | heritage and struggle of Mexican immigrant women garment workers |
---|
27 | 27 | | and farmworkers; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Centro Mayapan will also include a media and |
---|
29 | 29 | | technology center, where women can take classes in journalism and |
---|
30 | 30 | | the use of computers, and the Center for Bilingual Development and |
---|
31 | 31 | | Social Enterprise, where instruction in leadership development, |
---|
32 | 32 | | civic engagement, and entrepreneurship will be offered; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Planned to open in 2009, Centro Mayapan will |
---|
34 | 34 | | encourage economic and cultural development, generating jobs, |
---|
35 | 35 | | business growth, and community investment, and the women of La |
---|
36 | 36 | | Mujer Obrera may indeed take great pride in the scope and ambition |
---|
37 | 37 | | of this inspiring project; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate La Mujer Obrera for the development |

40 | 40 | | of Centro Mayapan Festival Marketplace and extend to the |

41 | 41 | | organization's members and supporters sincere best wishes for |
