44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The community organization La Mujer Obrera is
66 working to create jobs and sustainable economic opportunity for
77 low-income women workers in El Paso with its ambitious Centro
88 Mayapan Festival Marketplace project; and
99 WHEREAS, Founded in 1981, La Mujer Obrera is dedicated to
1010 fostering empowerment and employment with dignity for women of
1111 Mexican heritage and their families; it is also working to
1212 revitalize South Central El Paso by providing basic skills and
1313 vocational experience for women and helping them navigate the
1414 requirements for employment and the development of small
1515 businesses; and
1616 WHEREAS, Anchoring this effort is Centro Mayapan, a unique
1717 festival marketplace housed in a renovated 40,000-square-foot
1818 warehouse and encompassing a wide range of businesses, community
1919 services, and cultural opportunities; and
2020 WHEREAS, The center's Mercado Mayapan will be a vibrant
2121 indoor space for food vendors, artisans, and other
2222 microenterprises; a vital center for Mexican culture, Plaza
2323 Cultural will specialize in performances and exhibitions by
2424 dancers, musicians, and artists from both sides of the border,
2525 while the Museo Mayachen will feature permanent exhibits about the
2626 heritage and struggle of Mexican immigrant women garment workers
2727 and farmworkers; and
2828 WHEREAS, Centro Mayapan will also include a media and
2929 technology center, where women can take classes in journalism and
3030 the use of computers, and the Center for Bilingual Development and
3131 Social Enterprise, where instruction in leadership development,
3232 civic engagement, and entrepreneurship will be offered; and
3333 WHEREAS, Planned to open in 2009, Centro Mayapan will
3434 encourage economic and cultural development, generating jobs,
3535 business growth, and community investment, and the women of La
3636 Mujer Obrera may indeed take great pride in the scope and ambition
3737 of this inspiring project; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby congratulate La Mujer Obrera for the development
4040 of Centro Mayapan Festival Marketplace and extend to the
4141 organization's members and supporters sincere best wishes for
4242 continuing achievement; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4444 prepared for La Mujer Obrera as an expression of high regard by the
4545 Texas House of Representatives.
