H.R. No. 1549 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Houston Community College has renamed its Town and Country Campus as the Spring Branch Campus; and WHEREAS, One of the largest community college systems in the country, HCC began offering classes in Spring Branch in 1986 at the behest of the Spring Branch Independent School District; located initially on the SBISD Westchester Campus, HCC opened its own campus, Town and Country, in 2001, by which time enrollment in the school had grown to 3,600 students; and WHEREAS, Houston Community College launched its dual credit program for SBISD high school students in 1992, and in 2005 the college conducted community meetings to gather ideas about how it could help make higher education still more available to area residents; and WHEREAS, In 2009, HCC and SBISD entered an agreement to establish an Early College High School, an innovative program through which students simultaneously earn their high school diploma and either an associate's degree or two years' credit toward a bachelor's degree; and WHEREAS, The Spring Branch Campus currently provides high quality, affordable academic, career, and technical education through on-site and online classes to some 7,000 students; and WHEREAS, Since opening its doors just over two decades ago, the Houston Community College campus in Spring Branch has had a profound impact on the lives of countless students and on the quality of life in the surrounding community, and it is indeed fitting to recognize both its myriad achievements and the bright promise of the years ahead; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the renaming of the Town and Country Campus of Houston Community College as the Spring Branch Campus and extend sincere best wishes to everyone associated with the campus for continued success in all their endeavors.
