 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Dr. Kathleen Staudt has received the 2009 BRAVO
 Award from the League of Women Voters of El Paso; and
 WHEREAS, The BRAVO award recognizes outstanding individuals
 who are active in community service initiatives that benefit the El
 Paso area; a political science professor at The University of Texas
 at El Paso, Dr. Staudt was selected for this honor based on her long
 history of community involvement as well as her contributions as an
 educator and scholar; and
 WHEREAS, For nearly a decade, Dr. Staudt served as the
 director of the Center for Civic Engagement at UTEP, where she
 encouraged faculty and students to participate in efforts to
 improve the quality of life for residents of the El Paso-Ciudad
 Juarez region; she also helped establish the Women's Fund of El Paso
 and the Paso del Norte Nonprofit Resource Center, and she has
 contributed to local schools by offering numerous training sessions
 to educators on such topics as drop-out prevention and service
 learning; moreover, Dr. Staudt has remained an ardent supporter of
 voter education and women's rights; and
 WHEREAS, This esteemed professional has further
 distinguished herself as a leading scholar on social justice issues
 that arise along the United States-Mexico border, and she has
 published a number of books, including Violence and Activism at the
 Border: Gender, Fear, and Everyday Life in Cd. Juarez, Fronteras No
 Mas: Toward Social Justice at the U.S.-Mexico Border, and Policy,
 Politics, & Gender: Women Gaining Ground; and
 WHEREAS, Through her dedicated leadership and activism, Dr.
 Staudt is an inspiration to all who know her, and she may indeed
 reflect with great pride on the positive impact she has had on her
 community; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Kathleen Staudt on her receipt of the
 2009 BRAVO Award and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
 success; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Dr. Staudt as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
