| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Kathleen Staudt has received the 2009 BRAVO |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Award from the League of Women Voters of El Paso; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The BRAVO award recognizes outstanding individuals |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | who are active in community service initiatives that benefit the El |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Paso area; a political science professor at The University of Texas |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | at El Paso, Dr. Staudt was selected for this honor based on her long |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | history of community involvement as well as her contributions as an |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | educator and scholar; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, For nearly a decade, Dr. Staudt served as the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | director of the Center for Civic Engagement at UTEP, where she |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | encouraged faculty and students to participate in efforts to |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | improve the quality of life for residents of the El Paso-Ciudad |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Juarez region; she also helped establish the Women's Fund of El Paso |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and the Paso del Norte Nonprofit Resource Center, and she has |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | contributed to local schools by offering numerous training sessions |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | to educators on such topics as drop-out prevention and service |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | learning; moreover, Dr. Staudt has remained an ardent supporter of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | voter education and women's rights; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed professional has further |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | distinguished herself as a leading scholar on social justice issues |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | that arise along the United States-Mexico border, and she has |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | published a number of books, including Violence and Activism at the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Border: Gender, Fear, and Everyday Life in Cd. Juarez, Fronteras No |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Mas: Toward Social Justice at the U.S.-Mexico Border, and Policy, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Politics, & Gender: Women Gaining Ground; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Through her dedicated leadership and activism, Dr. |

| 31 | 31 | | Staudt is an inspiration to all who know her, and she may indeed |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | reflect with great pride on the positive impact she has had on her |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | community; now, therefore, be it |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby honor Dr. Kathleen Staudt on her receipt of the |

| 36 | 36 | | 2009 BRAVO Award and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued |
