R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A full and productive life came to an end with the
passing of Roberta Pittman Rice Brown of Kerrville on September 3,
2007, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, The daughter of Harold Frederick Rice and Jo
Pittman, the former Roberta Rice was born in Denver, Colorado, and
raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota; she attended the University of
Wisconsin and earned her bachelor's degree in music from The
University of Texas at Austin; in 1948, she married John William
Brown, and the couple were blessed with two cherished sons, Jay and
Warren; the family lived in Houston before moving to Kerrville in
1956; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown taught music at Starkey Elementary School
for nearly three decades; kind and patient with her students, she
encouraged them in their efforts to master instruments and
introduced them to music from around the world, even coaching
children to sing in Japanese for a memorable pageant; she was a
member of the Texas State Teachers Association, Texas Music
Educators Association, American Association of University Women,
and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; and
WHEREAS, A talented harpist, Mrs. Brown played for many years
at the Christmas candlelight service at First Presbyterian Church,
where she was an active member and an officer of the Presbyterian
Women group; she was also seen on stage in plays produced by the
Hill Country Arts Foundation, for which she was an enthusiastic
volunteer; in addition, she was active in the Republican Women of
Kerr County and worked tirelessly on numerous political campaigns;
and
WHEREAS, Roberta Brown is remembered for her devotion to her
family, her dedication as an educator and musician, and her support
of the arts, and she has left behind a legacy of intelligence,
optimism, and generosity that will be forever treasured by those
who held her dear; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Roberta Pittman Rice
Brown and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
her sons, Jay and Warren Brown; to her grandchildren, Cameron,
Collin, Christian, and Jennifer Brown; and to her other family
members and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roberta
Brown.
