| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, La Feria city commissioner John Hernandez has served |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | his community and his country with great distinction, and his |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | accomplishments are indeed worthy of special recognition; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In his boyhood, Mr. Hernandez joined his migrant |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | family in agricultural labor that took them north every harvest |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | season; although this work often forced him to get a late start in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | school, he studied diligently and graduated from La Feria High |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | School in 1968; that same year, he joined the U.S. Marines; while |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | serving in the 2nd Marine Division in Vietnam, he was wounded by |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | mortar fire and received a Purple Heart for his bravery; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hernandez went on to work for the United States |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Postal Service for three decades until his retirement; in recent |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | years, he has dedicated himself to the residents of La Feria, giving |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | generously of his time and talents as a volunteer and as a public |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | official; first elected as a city commissioner in 1995, he joined |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the economic development board and the city event planning board |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | that same year and continues to serve in all three capacities; from |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 1998 through 2005, this civic-minded Texan served as mayor pro tem |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of La Feria; in addition, he served on the original home-rule |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | charter committee in 1989; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Among his myriad endeavors, Mr. Hernandez has long |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | served as a member and officer of the Knights of Columbus, and he is |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | also a valued member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where he |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | serves as a Eucharistic minister; over the years, he and his wife, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the former Mary Cobarrubias, have participated in countless |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | community events; the devoted couple are the parents of three |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | treasured sons; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Through his selfless efforts and unwavering |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | commitment, John Hernandez has helped La Feria grow and prosper, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | and he has earned the respect and admiration of all who are |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby recognize John Hernandez for his noteworthy |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | achievements and extend to him best wishes for continued success; |
|---|
