55 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Jarrell celebrated their city's
66 100th anniversary on April 11, 2009; and
77 WHEREAS, Jarrell was platted in 1909 at the junction of an old
88 stagecoach line and the anticipated route of the Bartlett and
99 Western Railway; the new town grew quickly and reached a population
1010 of 500 by 1914, when it boasted electric lights, a waterworks, a
1111 hotel, and a movie theater; and
1212 WHEREAS, For most of the 1900s, Jarrell remained an
1313 agricultural community; the loss of rail service in 1935 and the
1414 decline of the cotton industry in the 1920s and 1930s removed much
1515 of the impetus for its growth, and the town settled into a quiet
1616 routine that lasted until the final decade of the 20th century; and
1717 WHEREAS, Since 1990, Jarrell's population has risen
1818 dramatically, and given its access to major transportation
1919 arteries, as well as its proximity to Austin, continued expansion
2020 is predicted for a number of years to come; and
2121 WHEREAS, Incorporated in 2001, Jarrell now enjoys a
2222 diversified economy, with enterprises ranging from light
2323 manufacturing to retail to quarrying; the outstanding quality of
2424 its schools serves as an additional attraction for families and
2525 businesses looking to relocate; and
2626 WHEREAS, At the heart of this thriving town is an indomitable
2727 community spirit; Jarrell was struck on May 27, 1997, by a
2828 devastating tornado that killed nearly 30 people; in the aftermath
2929 of the storm, a tenacious town rebuilt with the help of numerous
3030 local volunteers; that same spirit of mutual support today sustains
3131 a host of worthy civic endeavors; and
3232 WHEREAS, At this special milestone, as the citizens of
3333 Jarrell pause to reflect and celebrate, it is most fitting to
3434 recognize their industry, their accomplishments, and their
3535 unshakable determination; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3737 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
3838 founding of Jarrell and extend to all who call this city home
3939 sincere best wishes for a bright and prosperous future.
