| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Jarrell celebrated their city's |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 100th anniversary on April 11, 2009; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Jarrell was platted in 1909 at the junction of an old |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | stagecoach line and the anticipated route of the Bartlett and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Western Railway; the new town grew quickly and reached a population |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of 500 by 1914, when it boasted electric lights, a waterworks, a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | hotel, and a movie theater; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, For most of the 1900s, Jarrell remained an |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | agricultural community; the loss of rail service in 1935 and the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | decline of the cotton industry in the 1920s and 1930s removed much |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of the impetus for its growth, and the town settled into a quiet |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | routine that lasted until the final decade of the 20th century; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Since 1990, Jarrell's population has risen |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | dramatically, and given its access to major transportation |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | arteries, as well as its proximity to Austin, continued expansion |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | is predicted for a number of years to come; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Incorporated in 2001, Jarrell now enjoys a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | diversified economy, with enterprises ranging from light |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | manufacturing to retail to quarrying; the outstanding quality of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | its schools serves as an additional attraction for families and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | businesses looking to relocate; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, At the heart of this thriving town is an indomitable |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | community spirit; Jarrell was struck on May 27, 1997, by a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | devastating tornado that killed nearly 30 people; in the aftermath |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | of the storm, a tenacious town rebuilt with the help of numerous |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | local volunteers; that same spirit of mutual support today sustains |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | a host of worthy civic endeavors; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, At this special milestone, as the citizens of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Jarrell pause to reflect and celebrate, it is most fitting to |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | recognize their industry, their accomplishments, and their |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | unshakable determination; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | founding of Jarrell and extend to all who call this city home |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | sincere best wishes for a bright and prosperous future. |
