| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is joining with |

| 6 | 6 | | the Texas Association of Counties in recognizing May 6, 2009, as |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | County Government Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The week of May 3 through 8, 2009, is being observed |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | by the National Association of Counties as National County |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Government Week to provide the nation's citizens with an |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | opportunity to honor the many contributions made by county |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | governments; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The oldest form of local government in the United |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | States, county government addresses many critical issues, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | including environmental protection, indigent health care, special |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | assistance for the elderly, job training, and public safety; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, There are 254 counties in Texas, and the dedicated |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | individuals who serve our counties as elected or appointed |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | officials not only work diligently to meet the needs of citizens |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | without placing an undue burden on taxpayers but also commit |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | themselves to finding solutions to problems that will benefit all |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Texans; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Counties encourages |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | citizens across the state to observe National County Government |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Week by learning more about this vital form of local government and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the many ways in which it serves the public; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby commend the county officials of this state for |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | their countless contributions to Texas and welcome members of the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Texas Association of Counties to the State Capitol. |
