44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is joining with
66 the Texas Association of Counties in recognizing May 6, 2009, as
77 County Government Day at the State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, The week of May 3 through 8, 2009, is being observed
99 by the National Association of Counties as National County
1010 Government Week to provide the nation's citizens with an
1111 opportunity to honor the many contributions made by county
1212 governments; and
1313 WHEREAS, The oldest form of local government in the United
1414 States, county government addresses many critical issues,
1515 including environmental protection, indigent health care, special
1616 assistance for the elderly, job training, and public safety; and
1717 WHEREAS, There are 254 counties in Texas, and the dedicated
1818 individuals who serve our counties as elected or appointed
1919 officials not only work diligently to meet the needs of citizens
2020 without placing an undue burden on taxpayers but also commit
2121 themselves to finding solutions to problems that will benefit all
2222 Texans; and
2323 WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Counties encourages
2424 citizens across the state to observe National County Government
2525 Week by learning more about this vital form of local government and
2626 the many ways in which it serves the public; now, therefore, be it
2727 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2828 Legislature hereby commend the county officials of this state for
2929 their countless contributions to Texas and welcome members of the
3030 Texas Association of Counties to the State Capitol.
