44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Greater Dallas Section of the National Council
66 of Jewish Women has been at the forefront of community leadership
77 and social activism in Dallas for nearly a century; and
88 WHEREAS, Founded in 1913, the section today is composed of
99 some 1,200 members who volunteer thousands of hours each year to
1010 further the welfare of children, women, the elderly, and families
1111 and to advance the cause of social justice; and
1212 WHEREAS, The pressing needs of the day have regularly called
1313 forth a determined response from this exceptional organization,
1414 from providing home-front support during two World Wars to caring
1515 for child refugees from Nazi Germany, working to foster interracial
1616 understanding, and helping immigrants to achieve citizenship and
1717 integrate into American society; and
1818 WHEREAS, Many of the projects begun by the Dallas group have
1919 become ongoing endeavors or else served as precursors of
2020 present-day programs; these include the hot lunch and after-school
2121 programs for schoolchildren, the provision of free milk and baby
2222 formula, programs to screen for infant hearing problems and to
2323 enhance infant brain development, an advocacy program for foster
2424 children that evolved into Dallas CASA, and a program to support
2525 children who may need to testify in court in felony child abuse
2626 cases; in addition, the section introduced the Home Instruction for
2727 Parents of Preschool Youngsters program, an initiative to boost
2828 academic achievement that has since been adopted by a number of area
2929 school districts, and pioneered an adult literacy program that now
3030 ranks as one of the largest and most widely respected in the
3131 country; and
3232 WHEREAS, Over the past five years, the Dallas section has
3333 raised more than $1 million and distributed those funds to over 40
3434 projects in the Metroplex; at the same time, the organization
3535 continues its efforts to educate area citizens about significant
3636 issues and to develop the skills of community leaders; its own
3737 members have served on numerous city boards and commissions and on
3838 the city council, and three have held the office of Dallas mayor;
3939 and
4040 WHEREAS, Inspired by Jewish values and committed to
4141 progressive social action, the women of the Dallas section of the
4242 NCJW have helped secure for countless individuals the hope of a
4343 brighter, more promising future, and their far-reaching civic
4444 engagement is leaving an indelible imprint on a major city of the
4545 Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4747 Legislature hereby honor the Greater Dallas Section of the National
4848 Council of Jewish Women for their distinguished community service
4949 and extend to them sincere appreciation for their exemplary public
5050 spirit; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5252 prepared for the section as an expression of high regard by the
5353 Texas House of Representatives.
