5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Greater Dallas Section of the National Council |
---|
6 | 6 | | of Jewish Women has been at the forefront of community leadership |
---|
7 | 7 | | and social activism in Dallas for nearly a century; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1913, the section today is composed of |
---|
9 | 9 | | some 1,200 members who volunteer thousands of hours each year to |
---|
10 | 10 | | further the welfare of children, women, the elderly, and families |
---|
11 | 11 | | and to advance the cause of social justice; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The pressing needs of the day have regularly called |
---|
13 | 13 | | forth a determined response from this exceptional organization, |
---|
14 | 14 | | from providing home-front support during two World Wars to caring |
---|
15 | 15 | | for child refugees from Nazi Germany, working to foster interracial |
---|
16 | 16 | | understanding, and helping immigrants to achieve citizenship and |
---|
17 | 17 | | integrate into American society; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Many of the projects begun by the Dallas group have |
---|
19 | 19 | | become ongoing endeavors or else served as precursors of |
---|
20 | 20 | | present-day programs; these include the hot lunch and after-school |
---|
21 | 21 | | programs for schoolchildren, the provision of free milk and baby |
---|
22 | 22 | | formula, programs to screen for infant hearing problems and to |
---|
23 | 23 | | enhance infant brain development, an advocacy program for foster |
---|
24 | 24 | | children that evolved into Dallas CASA, and a program to support |
---|
25 | 25 | | children who may need to testify in court in felony child abuse |
---|
26 | 26 | | cases; in addition, the section introduced the Home Instruction for |
---|
27 | 27 | | Parents of Preschool Youngsters program, an initiative to boost |
---|
28 | 28 | | academic achievement that has since been adopted by a number of area |
---|
29 | 29 | | school districts, and pioneered an adult literacy program that now |
---|
30 | 30 | | ranks as one of the largest and most widely respected in the |
---|
31 | 31 | | country; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Over the past five years, the Dallas section has |
---|
33 | 33 | | raised more than $1 million and distributed those funds to over 40 |
---|
34 | 34 | | projects in the Metroplex; at the same time, the organization |
---|
35 | 35 | | continues its efforts to educate area citizens about significant |
---|
36 | 36 | | issues and to develop the skills of community leaders; its own |
---|
37 | 37 | | members have served on numerous city boards and commissions and on |
---|
38 | 38 | | the city council, and three have held the office of Dallas mayor; |
---|
39 | 39 | | and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Inspired by Jewish values and committed to |
---|
41 | 41 | | progressive social action, the women of the Dallas section of the |
---|
42 | 42 | | NCJW have helped secure for countless individuals the hope of a |
---|
43 | 43 | | brighter, more promising future, and their far-reaching civic |
---|
44 | 44 | | engagement is leaving an indelible imprint on a major city of the |
---|
45 | 45 | | Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby honor the Greater Dallas Section of the National |
---|
48 | 48 | | Council of Jewish Women for their distinguished community service |
---|
49 | 49 | | and extend to them sincere appreciation for their exemplary public |
---|
50 | 50 | | spirit; and, be it further |

51 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

52 | 52 | | prepared for the section as an expression of high regard by the |
