| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, An estimated 10 million people in the United States |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | and millions of people worldwide have been diagnosed with |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | fibromyalgia, a disease for which there is no known cause or cure; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | by widespread pain in muscles, ligaments, and tendons, as well as |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | fatigue and multiple tender points; although diagnoses of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | fibromyalgia are becoming increasingly common, it can take an |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | average of five years to receive a diagnosis because medical |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | professionals are often inadequately educated on the disease; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Manifested through myriad symptoms that can come and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | go unpredictably and vary in severity, fibromyalgia is |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | life-altering; people with fibromyalgia are never completely |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | symptom free, and this takes a toll emotionally, financially, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | socially on those who suffer from the disease, as well as on their |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | family and friends; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The chronically ill place a burden on the health |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | care and insurance industries, and society as a whole is impacted |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | when patients are physically unable to work and must depend on |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | government assistance to survive; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The National Fibromyalgia Association, Austin Fibro |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Friends, and other groups around the country are joining together |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | to promote enhanced education, diagnosis, research, and treatment |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of fibromyalgia; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Increasing public understanding of fibromyalgia is |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | essential to helping lessen the human and financial cost of this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | disease, and participating in National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | is one way to support this effort; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 12, 2009, as Fibromyalgia |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Awareness Day and encourage all Texans to learn more about this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | chronic pain disorder. |
