| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Weslaco Independent School District paid |

| 6 | 6 | | tribute to the life of an esteemed educator with the dedication of |

| 7 | 7 | | the Pete Abrigo Agricultural Science Complex on February 20, 2009; |

| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Agricultural Science Complex honors the late |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Pete Abrigo, who was an agricultural science teacher at Weslaco |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | High School for more than three decades; born to Tomas and Francisca |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Abrigo in 1938, Mr. Abrigo was a native of Encino, but was raised in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Inez; he went on to graduate from Victoria High School, where he was |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | president of the FFA; he later earned a bachelor's degree in |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | agriculture from Southwest Texas State University, and he joined |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Weslaco ISD in 1962; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, A caring and generous teacher, Mr. Abrigo donated |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the use of his ranch for students to raise their animals, helped |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | build a school agriculture farm, and established the Help Others |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Prevent End, or H.O.P.E., club on campus, which is a crisis |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | intervention and suicide prevention organization; highly regarded |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | by his peers, he was affiliated with an organization of Rio Grande |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Valley agricultural teachers and numerous agricultural education |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | committees; he served on the board of directors for the Vocational |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas and as president of the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Area 10 FFA chapter; fittingly, the Agricultural Science Complex |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | will be the Weslaco ISD site for FFA activities; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Abrigo further distinguished himself through |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | his civic contributions; he was a volunteer firefighter with the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Weslaco Fire Department, a cub scout leader, and a member of the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Knights of Columbus; he was also a faithful congregant of St. Pius X |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Catholic Church and planned many of its fund-raisers, and he was on |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the committees for the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Hidalgo County Youth Show; and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Pete Abrigo was committed to his profession and his |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | community, and the naming of the Weslaco ISD Agricultural Science |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Complex ensures that his legacy of good works will continue to |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | inspire young Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the Pete Abrigo |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Agricultural Science Complex and extend to the students and staff |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | of the Weslaco Independent School District sincere best wishes for |
