5	5	WHEREAS, Houston native Dru Torian has exhibited a lifelong
6	6	devotion to the sport of tennis and has distinguished herself
7	7	through her notable achievements in tournament competition; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born on February 14, 1978, she began hitting tennis
9	9	balls when she was just three years old, using a customized racquet
10	10	that had been cut down to fit her; at the age of six, she began
11	11	lessons at the Houston Racquet Club, which was next door to her
12	12	house, and honed her skills under the direction of the club's
13	13	instructors; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Ms. Torian gained early experience in competitive
15	15	tennis as a member of the Memorial Mustang tennis team and won
16	16	numerous tournaments in Texas as a junior player; during high
17	17	school, she was a student at the Purnell School in Pottersville, New
18	18	Jersey, and became the No. 1 seed on the tennis team; in 1994 and
19	19	1995, she was a state finalist, and in 1995, she reached the
20	20	semifinals and earned the Purnell Coaches Award; her years at
21	21	Purnell also introduced her to theater; she performed in the
22	22	school's annual play during her junior and senior years and also
23	23	appeared in two productions at Houston Community College; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Moving on to college level tennis, she was a member
25	25	of the team at Tyler Junior College and contributed to the Apaches'
26	26	junior college national championship in 1998; her outstanding play
27	27	that season also ranked her in the top 60 among women's singles
28	28	players in the nation; this skilled athlete further competed in
29	29	NCAA Division 2 matches as part of the team at Lees-McRae College in
30	30	North Carolina; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Ms. Torian's career has continued past her college
32	32	years, and she ranked among the top five in singles for women's open
33	33	players in Texas during the 2000-2001 season; a member of the United
34	34	States Professional Tennis Association since 2001, she has shared
35	35	her expertise with others as a tennis pro at the Houston Racquet
36	36	Club and Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville while maintaining her
37	37	focus on tournament competition; in 2008, she was recognized by the
38	38	United States Professional Tennis Association as its Women's Open
39	39	Player of the Year; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Away from the court, Ms. Torian is pursuing a degree
41	41	in exercise science at Schreiner University; moreover, she has
42	42	devoted herself to working with young people with special needs,
43	43	serving as a mentor to abused children in Kerrville and Austin and
44	44	assisting mentally disabled youth in Houston; and
45	45	WHEREAS, This dedicated athlete has spent countless hours
46	46	developing her skills on the court and striving to perform at the
47	47	peak of her abilities, and her determination and commitment to
48	48	excellence are an inspiration to all who know her; now, therefore,
49	49	be it
50	50	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
51	51	Legislature hereby honor Dru Torian for her achievements in
52	52	competitive tennis and extend to her sincere best wishes for
53	53	continued success; and, be it further
54	54	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
55	55	prepared for Ms. Torian as an expression of high regard by the Texas
56	56	House of Representatives.
