44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Houston native Dru Torian has exhibited a lifelong
66 devotion to the sport of tennis and has distinguished herself
77 through her notable achievements in tournament competition; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on February 14, 1978, she began hitting tennis
99 balls when she was just three years old, using a customized racquet
1010 that had been cut down to fit her; at the age of six, she began
1111 lessons at the Houston Racquet Club, which was next door to her
1212 house, and honed her skills under the direction of the club's
1313 instructors; and
1414 WHEREAS, Ms. Torian gained early experience in competitive
1515 tennis as a member of the Memorial Mustang tennis team and won
1616 numerous tournaments in Texas as a junior player; during high
1717 school, she was a student at the Purnell School in Pottersville, New
1818 Jersey, and became the No. 1 seed on the tennis team; in 1994 and
1919 1995, she was a state finalist, and in 1995, she reached the
2020 semifinals and earned the Purnell Coaches Award; her years at
2121 Purnell also introduced her to theater; she performed in the
2222 school's annual play during her junior and senior years and also
2323 appeared in two productions at Houston Community College; and
2424 WHEREAS, Moving on to college level tennis, she was a member
2525 of the team at Tyler Junior College and contributed to the Apaches'
2626 junior college national championship in 1998; her outstanding play
2727 that season also ranked her in the top 60 among women's singles
2828 players in the nation; this skilled athlete further competed in
2929 NCAA Division 2 matches as part of the team at Lees-McRae College in
3030 North Carolina; and
3131 WHEREAS, Ms. Torian's career has continued past her college
3232 years, and she ranked among the top five in singles for women's open
3333 players in Texas during the 2000-2001 season; a member of the United
3434 States Professional Tennis Association since 2001, she has shared
3535 her expertise with others as a tennis pro at the Houston Racquet
3636 Club and Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville while maintaining her
3737 focus on tournament competition; in 2008, she was recognized by the
3838 United States Professional Tennis Association as its Women's Open
3939 Player of the Year; and
4040 WHEREAS, Away from the court, Ms. Torian is pursuing a degree
4141 in exercise science at Schreiner University; moreover, she has
4242 devoted herself to working with young people with special needs,
4343 serving as a mentor to abused children in Kerrville and Austin and
4444 assisting mentally disabled youth in Houston; and
4545 WHEREAS, This dedicated athlete has spent countless hours
4646 developing her skills on the court and striving to perform at the
4747 peak of her abilities, and her determination and commitment to
4848 excellence are an inspiration to all who know her; now, therefore,
4949 be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5151 Legislature hereby honor Dru Torian for her achievements in
5252 competitive tennis and extend to her sincere best wishes for
5353 continued success; and, be it further
5454 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5555 prepared for Ms. Torian as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5656 House of Representatives.
