| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Ben De Leon of Austin has been named the 2009 Big |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Brothers Big Sisters National Big Brother of the Year; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, For the past three years, Mr. De Leon has been paired |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | with Anthony, a fifth grader at Wieland Elementary School in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Pflugerville, through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program; Mr. |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | De Leon has also been a spokesperson for the organization since |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 2007, and he is on the board of directors of the Big Society, a local |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | group for young professionals who are affiliated with BBBS; having |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | demonstrated exemplary dedication as a friend and mentor to |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Anthony, Mr. De Leon was selected by the National BBBS Committee as |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the Big Brother of the Year, and in June 2009, he and his "Little" |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | are traveling to Miami, Florida, to attend the National BBBS |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Conference; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A native of the Capitol City, Mr. De Leon graduated |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | with highest honors from The University of Texas at Austin in 2001, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | with bachelor's degrees in corporate communication and Spanish, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | he earned a juris doctor degree from The University of Texas School |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | of Law in 2004; the following year, he joined the firm De Leon & |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Washburn, P.C., as an associate in the area of general civil |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | litigation, as well as appellate, insurance, transactional, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | administrative law, and he has also assisted clients through |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Despite his busy professional life and his community |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | service endeavors, Mr. De Leon remains actively involved with his |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | alma mater through the Texas Exes Council and a number of other |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | groups and committees; in addition, he is a member of the State Bar |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of Texas and of both the state and city chapters of the Young |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Lawyers Association, and he is a deacon at the First Baptist Church |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | of Austin; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Ben De Leon has distinguished himself as a selfless |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | and compassionate volunteer, and his commitment to Big Brothers Big |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Sisters indeed merits special recognition; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby honor Ben De Leon on being named the 2009 |

| 39 | 39 | | National Big Brother of the Year and extend to him sincere best |

| 40 | 40 | | wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
