44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The residents of El Paso County lost a dedicated
66 public servant with the passing of El Paso County Sheriff Leo
77 Samaniego on December 28, 2007; and
88 WHEREAS, Sheriff Samaniego served his fellow citizens with
99 distinction during a career in law enforcement that spanned more
1010 than half a century; after a tenure in the U.S. Navy, he joined the
1111 El Paso Police Department, where his hard work and determination
1212 earned him a number of promotions through the years; and
1313 WHEREAS, In 1984, he retired from the El Paso Police
1414 Department as deputy chief; he was elected sheriff that same year,
1515 and under his able guidance, the office more than doubled in size
1616 and earned national accreditation for law enforcement and two
1717 jails, becoming the first sheriff's office in the state to
1818 accomplish such an achievement; and
1919 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know Leo Samaniego will
2020 long remember his dedication to his West Texas community, and
2121 although he is greatly missed, his legacy lives on in the
2222 institutions he nurtured and in the myriad accomplishments he
2323 leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
2424 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2525 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sheriff Leo Samaniego
2626 and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn his passing; and,
2727 be it further
2828 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2929 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3030 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Leo
3131 Samaniego.
