| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The residents of El Paso County lost a dedicated |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | public servant with the passing of El Paso County Sheriff Leo |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Samaniego on December 28, 2007; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sheriff Samaniego served his fellow citizens with |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | distinction during a career in law enforcement that spanned more |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | than half a century; after a tenure in the U.S. Navy, he joined the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | El Paso Police Department, where his hard work and determination |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | earned him a number of promotions through the years; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1984, he retired from the El Paso Police |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Department as deputy chief; he was elected sheriff that same year, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and under his able guidance, the office more than doubled in size |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and earned national accreditation for law enforcement and two |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | jails, becoming the first sheriff's office in the state to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | accomplish such an achievement; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know Leo Samaniego will |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | long remember his dedication to his West Texas community, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | although he is greatly missed, his legacy lives on in the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | institutions he nurtured and in the myriad accomplishments he |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | leaves behind; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sheriff Leo Samaniego |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn his passing; and, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | be it further |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Leo |
