H.R. No. 1751 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The friends and family of Ulysses Jones of Houston are mourning the loss of this beloved neighbor and admired church leader who passed away on March 16, 2009, at the age of 91; and WHEREAS, Born on May 18, 1917, to Sam and Viola Bernard Jones in Bunkie, Louisiana, Ulysses Jones was the youngest of four children and spent his early years in the nearby town of Marksville; he joined the Congregational St. John Baptist Church at an early age, beginning a lifelong journey of spiritual devotion; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jones met the love of his life, the former Eunice Barton, while living in Marksville, and though he later moved to Houston, he returned to Louisiana to marry his beloved in 1942; Mr. and Mrs. Jones settled in Houston and enjoyed 66 rewarding years of matrimony; the couple raised a cherished family that included 6 children, Ernest, Nobleton, Hannah, Ulysses, Eddie, and Marie, as well as 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, A dedicated man of faith, Mr. Jones was a member of Mt. Horem Baptist Church in Houston before joining Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church; he was ordained as a deacon at Mt. Ararat in the mid-1950s and served ably in that capacity for more than half a century; and WHEREAS, Ulysses Jones lived a full and generous life filled with meaningful achievements, and he leaves his loved ones with countless treasured memories of the happy times spent in his company; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ulysses Jones and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 66 years, Eunice Barton Jones; to his children, Ernest Jones and his wife, Birdie, Nobleton B. Jones and his wife, Lee Esther, Hannah Smith and her husband, Harvey, Ulysses S. Jones and his wife, Janice, Eddie Jones and his wife, Stephanie, and Marie Mure and her husband, Charles; to his adopted son, Julius Houston; to his grandchildren, Zanetta Traham and her husband, Dana, Nobleton F. Jones and his wife, Carrie, Devin Jones, Shunika Ward and her husband, Lathawn, Harvey and Haven Smith, Eddie Jones II, Ulysses S. Jones II, Jonathan and Joel Jones, and Camille Mure; to his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Traham, Ellis Allums, and Jazmine Ward; to his aunt, Ella Mae Washington; to his sisters-in-law, Doris Bates and Margie Jones; to his godchild, Bobbie Jean Johnson and her husband, Rufus; to his special cousin, Delores Johnson; to his nieces and nephews; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ulysses Jones.
