H.R. No. 1756 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Menard Morning Glories have received the 2009 National Junior Master Gardener Group Service and Achievement Award; and WHEREAS, The Junior Master Gardener international program works in partnership with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service with a mission to instill in its participants a passion for learning, success, and service through a unique gardening education; the annual group service and achievement accolade recognizes both leadership and philanthropy efforts among these youth groups; and WHEREAS, Created in 2005, the Menard Morning Glories have increased membership from 8 to 30 students beginning at the fourth-grade level; the group has 22 raised-bed garden plots, where they grow and maintain various seasonal vegetables, plants, and morning glory vines; in addition to practicing the basics of planting, watering, caring for, and harvesting their produce, the children reach out to the area garden club, fire department, senior center, and public library, as well as a number of schools, through their annual plant sale, which has helped fund field trips to Austin, San Antonio, Johnson City, and Fredericksburg; moreover, these fine young Texans have participated in such community beautification projects as the landscaping of the town library, and they have donated produce to local elderly residents; and WHEREAS, The members of the Menard Morning Glories are contributing to their community as they gain valuable life skills and the confidence to pursue their goals, and their hard work and dedication indeed merit special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Menard Morning Glories on their receipt of the 2009 National Junior Master Gardener Group Service and Achievement Award and extend to the group's leaders and members sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Menard Morning Glories as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
