H.R. No. 1758 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, For almost 50 years, the League of Women Voters of Richardson has fostered participation in the democratic process and empowered citizens to improve their community; and WHEREAS, A group of about 50 Richardson women convened in 1961 to form a provisional chapter of the League of Women Voters, the national nonpartisan political organization established in 1920; as required, prospective members in Richardson spent their first year studying every aspect of their small but growing city, and in 1962, they were recognized as an official chapter; two of the founding members still belong to the League of Women Voters of Richardson, and one of them serves today as vice president of the board; and WHEREAS, In keeping with the mission and goals of the national organization, the Richardson chapter of the league conducts voter registration drives and provides information to educate voters about the issues and candidates in local elections; the organization does not endorse or oppose candidates, but rather produces candidate forums and public programs on a wide variety of topics, featuring guest speakers with special knowledge and expertise; like other chapters across our nation, it provides the Guide to Elected Officials and Voters Guide, and in recent years, it has used its website to make information accessible to a greater number of residents; and WHEREAS, Members of the Richardson chapter have worked for a better quality of life through their advocacy of solutions to public policy issues based on intensive study and pursuit of consensus; through the years, they have researched such matters as land use, education, public health services, and the city charter and have championed numerous improvements, among them unified polling places, the city's inclusion in the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Rail System, better regulation of child care facilities, implementation of citywide recycling, expansion of public parks, televising city council meetings, and raising the ratio of nursing and counseling staff to students in public schools; and WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Richardson has long been a source of vital information and a catalyst for civic advancement, and its members can indeed take pride in the important role they play in elevating the public discourse and promoting active participation in government; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commend the League of Women Voters of Richardson and extend to its members best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
