5	5	WHEREAS, For more than half a century, General Motors has
6	6	played a significant role in the Texas economy, generating
7	7	thousands of jobs, and during that period, the industrious workers
8	8	of the Arlington Assembly Plant have contributed greatly to the
9	9	economic health and development of their community; and
10	10	WHEREAS, General Motors currently employs more than 5,500
11	11	Texans throughout the state, generating a payroll in excess of $500
12	12	million a year; these hardworking men and women have produced 7.5
13	13	million GM vehicles, more than any other automobile manufacturer in
14	14	the state; and
15	15	WHEREAS, First opened in 1954, the 250-acre GM Arlington
16	16	Assembly Plant was originally designed to assemble aircraft and
17	17	automobiles; over the years, the facility has produced a number of
18	18	popular GM models, and it currently manufactures the Cadillac
19	19	Escalade; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The factory has also been an important part of the
21	21	community in Arlington, employing many area Texans and providing
22	22	valuable property tax revenue; moreover, its employees have
23	23	generously supported such local charities as the United Way and
24	24	Toys for Kids; and
25	25	WHEREAS, The Arlington Assembly Plant is notable as well for
26	26	its environmental stewardship; in 2000, the plant was part of the
27	27	State of Texas Clean Industries program, and it has received
28	28	several consecutive annual awards for pretreatment excellence for
29	29	water discharged to the city of Arlington; in 2003, the plant earned
30	30	the Certificate of Achievement from the Green Lights Partnership of
31	31	the Environmental Protection Agency, and it received EPA Energy
32	32	Star awards for energy conservation in 2003 and 2004; and
33	33	WHEREAS, General Motors and the Arlington Assembly Plant have
34	34	long been, and continue to be, valuable members of the Texas
35	35	business community, and it is a pleasure to recognize the company's
36	36	commitment to the Lone Star State and to pay tribute as well to the
37	37	plant's dedicated employees; now, therefore, be it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
39	39	Legislature hereby honor the contributions of General Motors and
40	40	the Arlington Assembly Plant to the State of Texas and extend to the
41	41	company's management and employees sincere best wishes for the
42	42	future; and, be it further
43	43	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
44	44	prepared for the plant as an expression of high regard by the Texas
45	45	House of Representatives.
