5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jean Ann Ables-Flatt of Terrell has received a Best |

6 | 6 | | of East Texas Award from a Lufkin-based publishing company for her |

7 | 7 | | outstanding contributions toward the preservation of Kaufman |
---|
8 | 8 | | County history; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Bob Bowman, co-owner of Best of East Texas |
---|
10 | 10 | | Publishers, presented the award to Mrs. Ables-Flatt on April 7, |
---|
11 | 11 | | 2009, during a meeting of the Terrell City Council; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Ables-Flatt has been involved for more than two |
---|
13 | 13 | | decades in recovering, recording, and promoting local history, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | while pursuing those interests she has worked with a number of area |
---|
15 | 15 | | organizations; she is the longtime chair of the Kaufman County |
---|
16 | 16 | | Historical Commission, which under her leadership has won a |
---|
17 | 17 | | Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission |
---|
18 | 18 | | every year since 1995; in addition, she has served as director and |
---|
19 | 19 | | president of the Terrell Heritage Society (THS) and as historian |
---|
20 | 20 | | for First United Methodist Church; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The author of several booklets about local history |
---|
22 | 22 | | and of a regular feature in the THS newsletter, Mrs. Ables-Flatt has |
---|
23 | 23 | | also written and produced a play about a notable incident in the |
---|
24 | 24 | | city's past, and her theatrical flair helps her to make history come |
---|
25 | 25 | | alive for children when she portrays various historical figures for |
---|
26 | 26 | | them, dressed in period costumes; other avenues for sharing her |
---|
27 | 27 | | knowledge and enthusiasm include volunteering her skills as a |
---|
28 | 28 | | certified genealogical records specialist at the Riter C. Hulsey |
---|
29 | 29 | | Public Library, helping residents to trace the history of their |
---|
30 | 30 | | homes, and leading historic driving tours of the city; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of her tireless commitment, a special |
---|
32 | 32 | | day was proclaimed in her honor in 1996, and she was appointed in |
---|
33 | 33 | | 1999 to a six-year term on the Texas Historical Commission; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Jean Ann Ables-Flatt has devoted untold hours to |
---|
35 | 35 | | researching and preserving the history of a special corner of the |
---|
36 | 36 | | Lone Star State, and through her exceptional efforts, countless |
---|
37 | 37 | | citizens have gained a richer appreciation of their heritage; now, |
---|
38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jean Ann Ables-Flatt on her receipt |

41 | 41 | | of a Best of East Texas Award from Best of East Texas Publishers and |

42 | 42 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all her |
